Falmouth Mayor Alan Jewell is raising money to help bring back the town's lost pool by swimming the Channel distance: 33,700m in 33 sessions
Falmouth Town Mayor Alan Jewell was instrumental in securing the transfer of the old leisure centre to Falmouth Town Council and Pendennis Leisure in 2023, and now he's made us the Mayor's charity for 2025, Alan is taking the plunge to raise funds personally for the community crusade to create a new public pool in the town.
Listen to him talk about his swim on BBC Cornwall with James Churchfield at 07:40am on 21st October!
Alan hasn't swum much at all since he was a teenager, so to swim the Channel distance in such a short time is a massive challenge for him, and he is looking for support from one and all to help him do it and raise funds for the Pendennis Leisure charity to help them get planning permission for a new pool.
Alan's funding target is to get 10p donated for every meter he swims - 33700m = £3370. Imagine if he could get 50p a metre!!
As well as raising money, Alan is committing to this sponsored swim to highlight Falmouth's need for a pool. Since we don’t have a public swimming pool here in Falmouth, he'll be completing his challenge at Carn Brea Leisure Centre 12 miles and 35 minutes away.
So as well as swimming 33,700 metres in 33 sessions (1348 lengths) Alan will also have to drive over 800 miles and spend around 40 hours on the road! Just to highlight how hard it is for local people to access swimming facilities and prove that Falmouth Needs A Public Swimming Pool.
Alan says, "💙 Why am I doing this? Because our coastal community — surrounded by the sea — needs a swimming pool where children and adults can learn to swim, stay active, and live healthy lives.
This year, I’m supporting Pendennis Leisure, a fantastic local charity that’s continuing to campaign for a new swimming pool for our area, all while running a busy health, fitness, and wellbeing community hub.
🏅 If you’d like to support me and this important cause, please consider donating - every length I swim gets us one stroke closer to a new pool for our community!
I’ll be tracking my progress and sharing regular updates along the way! Thank you for your support 💦💫"
Big thanks to Carn Brea Leisure Centre for kindly offering Alan free membership for 33 days so he can make this swim happen.
