We all wear masks. This short film explores what happens when someone finally refuses to put theirs back on.
A Little About Us
MASKS didn’t begin as a film. It began with writing.
I’m Gavin Skevington, a writer exploring identity, pressure and the experience of navigating the world through a neurodivergent perspective and write under the pseudonym Tobey Alexander.
After reading my short novel The Vault, Director Gary Fannin recognised something distinct and reached out.
What started as a conversation about neurodivergence became a shared drive to create work that says something real.
MASKS is the first project born from that partnership.
Why we are asking for funding
Making a film, even a short one, is a logistical undertaking that most people never see.
What ends up on screen is the result of dozens of decisions, dozens of people, and dozens of costs that have nothing to do with cameras.
We are asking for £5,000 to fund the production of MASKS. That sits alongside £4,000 already committed privately by the filmmakers themselves, bringing the total production budget to £9,000.
Here is exactly where every pound goes:
WHAT IT COVERS
People - crew & cast:
Director of Photography, 1st AD, Production Designer, Gaffer, Sound Recordist, Makeup & Wardrobe, Camera Operator, and our Lead Actor. Each one a professional, each one essential to the film being what it needs to be.
£3,300
Equipment hire:
Camera package, lenses, lighting rig, and sound kit, hired across three shoot days. None of it owned outright. All of it necessary.
£1,000
Locations & production design:
Two location hires; a high-end city penthouse and a premium kitchen, each filmed in a half-day. Plus, the construction and hire of a bespoke wardrobe set built specifically for this story. The physical world of Masks has to be as considered as its script.
£2,500
Post-production:
Editing, colour grading, sound design, and final mix. The work that happens after the camera stops rolling - and takes just as long. Some of this will be contributed by talented collaborators at reduced rates. This covers the costs they cannot waive.
£500+
Production essentials:
£1,000
Contingency:
Because no production goes exactly to plan.
£400
Crowdfunder target:
£5,000
Private investment (already secured):
£4,000
Total production budget:
£9,000
No part of this budget is waste. Every line exists because the story requires it. Should any costs exceed what is budgeted here, the filmmakers will cover the difference personally. That is not a caveat, it is a commitment.
