Help Us Secure the Future of Market Town Yarns & Yarn Worx

Hi, we're Gavin and Teresa - the husband and wife team behind Yarn Worx and Market Town Yarns.

Seven years ago we started our business in a log cabin in our garden with nothing more than a passion for beautiful yarns, plenty of determination and a dream of creating something special.

Today, we're incredibly proud to welcome customers through the doors of our High Street shop while hand-dyeing exclusive yarn collections and sending our products to knitters and crocheters across the UK and beyond.

Now we're ready for the biggest step we've ever taken.

We've found the perfect commercial property to become the permanent home of our business. A commercial mortgage will fund most of the purchase. We have now raised the deposit through a remortgage but need a further £20,000 to cover legal and brokerage fees, and renovations to the building.

We're not asking people to fund a dream - we're asking for help to secure something that's already within our grasp.

Every pledge, no matter how big or small, brings us one step closer to securing the future of our family business.

Our Story

Every great adventure starts somewhere - ours started in a log cabin in our garden.

With a passion for beautiful yarns, plenty of determination and a dream of creating something special, we launched Yarn Worx as an online-only business.

Every order was packed by hand (as it still is today), every customer email answered personally, and every milestone - no matter how small - felt like a huge achievement. Even now, we are grateful for every single order.

Then, not long after we began, the world changed.

Covid happened.

Like thousands of independent businesses, we suddenly found ourselves navigating an uncertain future. Yet through it all, one thing became clear - people value creativity, community and making things with their hands. Knitting and crochet became a source of comfort for so many, and we were incredibly grateful to play a small part in that.

As Yarn Worx grew, so did our ambitions.

Before long, our little log cabin could no longer keep up. We had furniture in storage, spare rooms filled with stock, and our home had slowly become more of a workplace than a home.

The next step was moving into a small industrial unit, giving us the space to expand our range of yarns and accessories while keeping up with the growing number of orders.

Then, in April 2023, another opportunity presented itself.

The rent on our industrial unit was due to double and we simply couldn't afford to stay there. Fortunately, a High Street shop became available at just the right time and we took another leap of faith.

Moving was stressful, but it allowed us to create the welcoming yarn shop we'd always dreamed of.

Today, alongside Yarn Worx, we've launched our own hand-dyed yarn brand - Market Town Yarns. We now design and create exclusive yarn collections, make our own knitting and crochet accessories, and send our products to makers across the UK and beyond.

Every step of that journey has been achieved through hard work, careful planning and the incredible support of our customers.

The Next Chapter

For the first time, owning a permanent home for our business feels within reach.

We've found a commercial property locally that has everything we've been dreaming of since those early days in our garden log cabin.

Owning our own premises would mean far more than simply buying a building.

It would give us security.

It would allow us to invest in our future instead of paying ever-increasing rent.

It would give us the space to create a much better dye studio, expand our product range, host more workshops and continue building a business that serves the knitting and crochet community for many years to come.

After seven years of growing from a garden log cabin, to an industrial unit, to our High Street shop, we genuinely believe we're ready for this next chapter.

For now we're keeping the exact location under wraps while the purchase progresses, but we can tell you it's less than five minutes from our current shop and comes with something many of our customers wish for...

Free parking.

We'll share everything as soon as we're able.

After seven years of renting every building we've worked from, the thought of finally having somewhere to call home means more to us than we can put into words.

Why Move?

As much as we love being part of Hadleigh High Street, our current premises are becoming increasingly expensive to run.

Heating our listed building through the winter is incredibly expensive, yet it's still so cold that we provide hot water bottles for our knitting group.

Business rates are also increasing and will eventually reach £800 per month.

Recent parking charges introduced in the town have also reduced footfall.

The building we've found solves so many of those problems.

It has a much better layout for hand-dyeing yarn, lower running costs and plenty of free parking.

Reducing our fixed monthly costs means we can invest more money back into the business, develop new products and secure our future for many years to come.

Why We're Crowdfunding

Everything we've built over the last seven years has been achieved through hard work, determination and a willingness to invest in ourselves.

Like many small businesses, we didn't start with outside investors or large amounts of capital.

We built Yarn Worx using our own savings, remortgaging our home, business loans and, at times, even credit cards.

Every move we've made has been funded through careful planning, hard work and the incredible support of our customers.

Now we're asking for your help with what we hope will be our final move.

The purchase of the building will be funded primarily through a commercial mortgage.

As we mentioned above, this Crowdfunder is to raise the funds needed to cover legal fees and renovation costs.

In addition to the money raised here, we're also remortgaging our home once again because we believe so strongly in what we're trying to achieve.

Every contribution, no matter how big or small, brings us one step closer to unlocking the door to our forever home.

Your support will help secure the future of an independent family business, allow us to expand our hand-dyeing facilities, create new products, host more workshops and continue serving the knitting and crochet community for many years to come.

Most importantly, it will create a permanent home for Yarn Worx and Market Town Yarns.

Thank You
We know we're asking a lot.

But if the last seven years have taught us anything, it's that incredible things can happen when a community comes together.

We're not asking for a handout - we're inviting you to become part of the next chapter of a story that our wonderful community has helped us write over the last seven years.

If Yarn Worx or Market Town Yarns has ever inspired your creativity, helped you learn something new, or simply brought a little joy to your knitting or crochet journey, we'd be honoured if you would consider becoming part of our story.

We've put together a range of rewards to thank everyone who chooses to support us. If you'd simply like to help without selecting a reward, you can also make a donation of any amount.

Every pledge, no matter how big or small, brings us one step closer to creating the forever home of Yarn Worx and Market Town Yarns.

Thank you for believing in us, and for helping us write the next chapter.

Gavin & Teresa
