To create a large-scale mural of Manchester legend - Mani - and to raise vital funds for a cancer charity close to his heart - Maggie's
If you're reading this, chances are you're standing in front of the Mani Mural in Failsworth.
This mural exists because of the incredible love people have for Gary "Mani" Mounfield.
When Ian Brown stood up at Manchester Cathedral and said goodbye to Mani, the whole city felt it. In the weeks that followed, fans from across Greater Manchester, the UK and beyond shared memories, stories and tributes to a man who meant so much to so many.
We (GRIT Studios CIC) wanted to create something permanent in the place that made him.
With the support of hundreds of donors, friends, family and fans, we launched a community Crowdfunder to create a large-scale mural of Mani in his hometown of Failsworth — the North Manchester streets where a young lad grew up to become one of the most loved bassists in British music history.
Mani's brother Greg helped make it happen. He found the location, supported the project from the start and helped ensure the tribute was worthy of his brother's legacy.
The mural was painted by Pic.One.Art, the street artist behind the iconic Noel and Liam mural outside Sifters Records in Burnage. Together, we set out to create a fitting tribute to a musician, a Manchester icon and, above all, a genuinely loved human being.
What began as a crowdfunding campaign has become something much bigger. The mural has quickly become a destination for fans from across the world, bringing people to Failsworth to celebrate Mani's life, music and spirit.
Supporting Maggie's Manchester
The mural is now complete, but the fundraising continues as Mani’s legacy.
All donations are now being directed to Maggie's Manchester, a charity that was close to both Mani's and his beloved wife Imelda's hearts.
Maggie's provides free practical, emotional and psychological support to people living with cancer, as well as their families and friends. The charity supported Mani and Imelda during her cancer treatment, and the couple went on to support Maggie's through fundraising of their own.
If you've visited the mural and would like to leave a donation in Mani's memory, we'd be incredibly grateful.
Every contribution, no matter the size, will help Maggie's continue its vital work and ensure that this tribute to Mani continues to make a difference in people's lives.
Thank you for visiting.
Mani forever.
