There is a diversity crisis in the arts! We're raising money to support and fund working-class and global majority artists in Theatre.
Only 2.4% of funding in the UK goes to Global Majority organisations. Only 8% of people in the arts come from a working-class background.
This is because of two key barriers:
Opportunity: Unconscious bias in casting/employment, networks, nepotism, and closed circles, often result in these demographics getting locked out.
Cost: Most working-class and global majority artists are priced out of the industry within 5 years. This is particularly intense at a small - midscale level, where the expectation that artists work unpaid hours is the norm.
As a company we are committed to employing working class and global majority artists on our projects!
But whilst we are able to provide the Opportunity, we need your help to tackle the Cost.
Through this fund, we can guarantee payment for the artists who need it the most on all of our projects, big and small, and not be at the whim of small and competitive funding pots (though we will continue to apply for these).
Just as the mango tree thrives in soil that’s rich with biodiversity, we believe a more diverse theatrical ecosystem benefits us all. Help restore balance to the arts here in Britain… one small donation at a time!
We’re a theatre company that champions diverse political voices. We produce socio-political new plays and tour them around the UK.
We aim to overcome the economic, discriminatory, and geographical restrictions that define our theatrical landscape through creating opportunities for global majority and/or working-class artists. We travel to disadvantaged/rural areas in an aim to redistribute cultural capital, reviving the rich tradition of theatre in our regions.
We’ve developed and toured three shows nationally, going to a combination of rural community spaces and larger receiving houses, engaging local communities less likely to attend the theatre with stories that speak directly to them.
We are developing 3-5 new shows (funding-dependent) this year. We are aiming to host week-long R&Ds on all of them. To test the material, explore different creative pathways, and play with form and style.
These shows include:
A devised show about the housing crisis and the power of community connection.
A community-driven show about food banks
A redevelopment of a previous show, exploring how working-class and global majority people have to fight for respectability
A new family show about South Asian mythology
A show about how we are constantly pressured to monetise every aspect of ourselves
£7000 would fund paying our artists for two to three of our week-long R&Ds. Anything additional you can spare will help us develop more projects, engaging an even broader range of communities and artists in the process!
