An Ancient Building With a Bold Future
The Mint House is not your typical heritage site. It's a 500-year-old, Grade II* listed former inn in the heart of Sussex, and it’s alive with stories, folklore, and community spirit. But more importantly, it’s a place where we’re doing heritage differently—and inviting everyone in.
We're Not Just Preserving History—We're Reinventing It
Through bold, inclusive programming, exhibitions rooted in folklore, and creative partnerships (including a licensed tattoo studio!), The Mint House has become a cultural home for people who often feel left out of traditional heritage spaces.
We’re breaking barriers, embracing creativity, and turning this once-forgotten building into a thriving hub of activity, storytelling, and belonging.
But First—We Need to Save It
Despite all we've achieved, the building itself is in serious trouble. The Mint House is suffering from:
Historic England has placed the Mint House on its Buildings at Risk Register. Without urgent action, this nationally significant piece of our shared history could be lost.
A Critical Turning Point
We’ve secured a 30-year lease, built a skilled and passionate team, and earned the support of local councils and organisations. We've even begun to attract attention from major funders like the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
But before we can unlock larger restoration funding, we need your help to take the next crucial step: commissioning a full condition survey and launching a trial programme of exhibitions and events to shape a sustainable future.
