Why children in care?
Health Trusts don’t provide suitcases. So more often than not, children in care put all their worldly belongings in a bin bag as they move from one place to the next.
Our Story
Madlug was founded in 2015 by Dave Linton. A man whose only experience in the luggage industry was bags of enthusiasm. This 40-something Youth Worker was heartbroken to learn that most children in care transport their worldly belongings in a bin bag. In that moment, Dave set out to do something about it. With just £480, he started Madlug and came up with our ‘one for one’ approach: with every bag you purchase, one will be given to a child in care.
The Reality
There are over 90,000 children in care in the UK and Ireland. One child enters the UK care system every 20 minutes. What’s more, over half are victims of neglect or abuse. Because children in care aren’t given a voice, the public don’t know about the problems they face everyday. Which is why it’s so important that their story is heard.
New Radicals
The Observer named Madlug as one of their New Radicals in 2016. Since then, our grassroots movement has spread throughout the UK and beyond. But we wanted to go further. That’s why we’re taking another radical step this year by moving our manufacturing process to Belfast. We’re working in partnership with USEL which is a social enterprise that provides supported employment for people with disabilities.

How we help
The cost of every bag in our shop covers: a free bag for a child in care, the item you choose, plus free postage (for orders over £30 in UK and Ireland). We worked with Health Trusts and care experienced young people to develop a giving bag that is centred around the needs of children in care.
The bag itself is unbranded to avoid stigma. It folds away to fit neatly into a sock drawer or a Social Worker’s car boot without wasting storage space. And each bag has a label that says “You are incredible” to remind every child that they have value, worth and dignity.

This is why we are crowdfunding.
Over the past few months we have seen a huge increase in requests for our giving bags from Children in care, Social Workers, Foster carers, Charities and local trusts. We are supper excited about this as the movement exists so that no child carries their life in a bin bag. Each giving bag costs Madlug £10 to manufacture and deliver to the children and young people in care across the UK and Ireland.
Raising our target would be amazing as it will enable Madlug to order extra bags to be manufactured here in Belfast so that we can meet the current demand.

How will we reward you?
With every pledge you will get a personal thank you sent to you through email or with a handwritten card. Every pledge £30 or over will be rewarded with limited edition backpack. Each backpack will have a number on the front which will indicate how many bags you have pledged for.

A couple of weeks ago we received a handwritten letter from a young person in care who had received one of the giving bags. They wrote "I think sometimes people forget that every human being is deserving and should be shown love and compassion and valued. I know that being so lost in the care system I have often struggled to feel that way about myself. I wanted to thank you all for not only reminding me of this reality, but for truly making me feel it, for extending out the arm of solidarity."
