Aim

We need to upgrade our tennis courts to ensure the future of our club. They have not been resurfaced in over 20 years and need updating!

We are Lyn Tennis Club. We all have one thing in common, a love of tennis and an understanding of what it can do for individuals and the community as a whole! We are in the heart of Lynton, North Devon, a beautiful but remote community.

Why are we crowdfunding?

We want our club to continue to grow and thrive and to encourage new people of all ages to play tennis. For this to happen we need to re-surface our tennis courts as our current surface is very worn, uneven and slippery. The uneven surface means the bounce of the ball can be very unpredictable and we have lots of puddles when it rains. We know the importance of having a place to meet and play to bring the community together and give people an outlet. Tennis has been played in Lynton for over 100 years and we want this to continue, and we want to encourage everyone in the community to join us.

We been successful in our application to Sport England's Movement Fund. If we raise £10,500, they will match fund this, taking our total to £21,000 which is what we need to re-surface one court. But we must raise £10,500 to get any money from Sport England! Anything we raise over this amount will be added to the fund to repair our second court at some point in the future.

We have recently introduced junior coaching sessions and youth club sessions for the first time in many years which we of course plan to continue and develop. We also plan to add pickleball markings to the re-surfaced court to encourage more people to use the courts. We already run popular short tennis sessions, and pickleball markings will mean people can choose between tennis, short tennis and pickleball.

We are a rural community with limited transport links. Reviving these courts will mean that local people as well as all our many visitors / tourists to the town will have access to good quality facilities without having a lengthy car or bus ride.

How we’ll spend the money raised

We will spend the money on a new tarmac (‘Playmac’) surface for one of our tennis courts (very similar to the picture below). This will also give us the opportunity to add pickleball lines added so we can offer this as an option alongside short tennis, which we already offer.

Community impact

We are a small rural community. Our club is open to everyone of all ages and abilities. The tennis club is one of the only sports facilities in the village for the young and older generation. The new tennis surface and addition of the pickleball markings will attract new members leading to increased community cohesion between all members of our community. The new surface will be safe, enabling us to continue to attract older people and those with long term health conditions ensuring we all remain active, boosting the physical and mental health of our members and visitors.
