Aim

After moving from web page to print with our first two editions of short fiction and essays, we're planning a very special Lunate vol. 3

For vol. 3 of the print edition of Lunate, we're looking to expand upon the success of vol. 1 and vol. 2, and also secure the future of Lunate in print.

The feedback we've received for our move into print has been staggering. Readers have praised both the content and the design (including the satisfying 'bookfeel') of our print edition. If we were to summarise the process and how we got there, we'd say it involved: a distinct aesthetic (a desire to publish ambitious, challenging literary fiction and non-fiction from both emerging and established writers); a passionate and sensitive editorial approach (writers have really enjoyed working with us, and responded to our close but light-touch approach); clarity of design (retaining our distinctive monochrome minimalism, employing beautiful typography and typesetting); binding and printing with love (we use the publishing industry stalwarts TJ Books to print Lunate.)

And now we'd like to ensure that we can produce a third volume that matches its predecessors for quality, while at the same time gaining some logistical and financial breathing space.

It's really quite simple: Lunate is a labour of love, and our ambitions are grounded in reality. All we'd like to do is raise enough money to pay our writers and pay for the journal to be printed. In short: shift away from paying for all costs from our own coffers and then slowly replacing that cash with the proceeds of sales. That's it. That's all we'd like to achieve. We're not looking to pocket a profit — we simply want to replace the current crawl towards breaking even with each volume, and keep making this thing that we and our readers love.

In many ways, this funding exercise represents a feasibility study for the future of Lunate in print. If we can secure the upfront commitment to a new edition, we can start to map out the path to producing subsequent, regular issues, attracting those writers who've not yet found us, and improving our whole economies of scale (including our writer's fee.)

For vol. 3, we plan to publish six pieces of new work: most likely four longform short stories and two pieces of non-fiction (essays/personal memoir), but this could well change depending on submissions. We're so excited to see who might send us work for this edition and how me might curate our best volume to date.

All writers will be paid £100 (with the submission window opening, if we are successful, on March 6th for six weeks), and printing costs will be approximately £300. In short, Lunate vol. 3 will cost £900 to produce. Our own time (reading, editing, typesetting, designing, managing all of the logistics) will be paid for by — well... you remember we said it was a labour of love, right..?

Should the project succeed,  envisage commissioning all work by the end of April, with vol. 3 being produced and shipped by the end of May.

We hope you're able to help us keep on keeping on.

Our love and thanks, Han and Gary

PS We've tried to keep postage costs as low as possible and those costs are specified in the options list for all items. Please note that we are shipping to the UK and Ireland only.
