Aim

Unseat the Lib Dems in Didsbury West! Fighting for action on climate change, affordable housing and expanding culture and the arts

What do I believe in?

I became involved with the Labour Party after suffering the twin effects of the financial crash and the brutality of austerity first-hand. I struggled to make a living in my early twenties, I went from being on benefits to working minimum wage jobs and watched as public services began to deteriorate. I have seen friends and loved ones unable to access NHS services they urgently need, I have seen the underfunded police force fail to assist victims of crime, I have watched as libraries and schools struggle for funding while the architects of the crash - the banking sector - continued to see its profits boom with very little accountability or consequence. Witnessing desperation and pain inflicted on so many people unnecessarily sparked a real anger in me which continues to inform my politics and drives my determination to fight for human dignity. Outside of the party I have campaigned on environmental issues and anti-racism, I am proud member of Unite and a committed trade-unionist.

Key elements of my campaign:

Housing

I have held volunteer and paid positions in community housing groups and tenant’s unions within Greater Manchester, as an advocate and lobbyist pushing for more affordable and social housing, as well as working actively on member defense to prevent illegal evictions during the COVID pandemic. I am extremely excited about Manchester Council’s commitment to building council houses, and if I’m elected as councillor I look forward to working with the new leader Bev Craig to deliver on these commitments.

Climate

I am a keen cyclist and believe passionately in expanding Manchester's cycle network, as well as electrifying our publicly-run bus network and using renewable energy to power it. I also wish to advocate for sustainable economic and environmental policy within the Labour Party at Conference, advocating for re-wilding and growth-agnosticism alongside a Green New Deal.

Culture

I am a huge lover of music and the arts. I co-founded a company in 2017 which runs immersive events across Manchester, championing unsigned artists. I also co-founded a not-for-profit and community-run music festival which sells out annually. As councillor I would use my experience as a promoter to ensure that West Didsbury would have access to even more live music and creative arts, building on the already buzzing Burton Road to create a real cultural hub in South Manchester.

What is the money for?

Funding to fight a social media and on the ground grassroots campaign. Shooting some campaign videos, holding events and producing election content such printed leaflets and letters to local residents. These things are expensive!

John Leech the sitting Liberal Democrat currently has a 600 majority which we need to overturn, we're in for a proper fight!

When is the election?

5th May, but I need to reach out to residents before then! Thank you so much for all your help.
