Aim

Help the BBA get back to full capacity. Your donation will be used for essential building works to enable us to get back to full capacity.

Your chance to support the BBA during a difficult time.

Like thousands of charities in the UK, the Boat Building Academy has been seriously affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. In March 2020, the Academy was forced to close for four months, eventually reopening in July and is now closed again. Over the last year, the pandemic has cost the Academy more than £300,000 in lost income.

Since July, the Academy has been operating at a limited capacity. Staff have worked hard to make sure the teaching environment is as safe as possible whilst maintaining effective training. However, the socially distanced teaching has had a knock-on effect on how many students we are able to accommodate.

Additional workshop/classroom space is urgently needed if the Academy is to return to optimal capacity. We are seeking funding to convert part of the student accommodation block into a new workshop and to expand the mezzanine area. The cost of the conversion has a professional estimate of £76,000.

The Academy has already raised £27,000 through various charitable trusts and other donations

Despite an uncertain trading environment, the Boat Building Academy remains a financially viable business that has seen significant growth in recent years. However, some assistance from our followers, friends and associates would be most useful and much appreciated to support the future of the academy.

Your donation will directly benefit the next generation of boat builders and furniture makers at the Academy

About the Boat Building Academy

Founded in 1997, the Boat Building Academy in Lyme Regis, Dorset, gained charity status in January 2020. The main objective is to provide bursaries to disadvantaged applicants. We will be awarding six bursaries in 2021.

We have been teaching men and women boat building and furniture making for the last 24 years.

Further information about the Academy and what we do can be found on our website: www.boatbuildingacademy.com
