Aim

To ensure "The Lost Words" by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris find a home in every Primary School in Nottinghamshire

Our project is to enable all primary age children in Nottinghamshire to share in what the award-winningly spell-conjuring  book The Lost Words has to offer by securing for every school across the city and county its own copy. The hope is help all those children for whom nature is  challenging to reach, and for whom the words of nature risk slipping away.

The Lost Words Book created by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris celebrates once-common “nature” words – from acorn and wren, to dandelion and starling.  The magical illustrations of Jackie Morris and the inventive 'spell poems' of Robert Macfarlane conjure them back. The book recently co-won Children's Book of the Year 2018. For both authors the real prize is winning back for young (shared with older) a basic literacy of the living  world around us. Nottinghamshire was Robert's county of childhood.

Why this matters  As Robert explains in this short video: "Names, good names, well used, help us see and help us care. We find it hard to love what we cannot give a name to and what we do not love, we will not save".

Nottinghamshire is a county with literacy issues (the more so in the city of Nottingham itself), of diverse communities and a Sherwood Forest heritage - where the natural world should be given pride of place. That is why this campaign has the backing of Notts Wildlife Trust, Notts County 'Football in the Community'  and Nottingham UNESCO City of Literature, with help too from the independent Five Leaves Bookshop. It is important to all of them, as we hope to you.

How you can help  Our not-for-profit campaign means that, with £5,000 raised, we can make sure that all  city of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire primary and special schools have an opportunity for their children to experience what this wonderful book has to offer: http://www.lostwordsfornotts.co.uk.  With Crowdfunder, we have to achieve our target or no money is taken from you, our supporters. So please,  help win this campaign  - a 'hush of librarians' is standing by ready to deliver the books for next school year - of benefit for years to come. Think of your donation as a mighty acorn delivered to the home county of "Major Oak". Thank you.
