To provide a copy of The Lost Words, by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris, to every Primary School in Gloucestershire.
When The Lost Words was first published in October, we took Jackie Morris to one of our favourite primary schools for the day. It was one of the most inspirational days we have ever spent. The school ended up buying a copy for every classroom - fourteen in total.
The book takes as it's starting point words that are falling out of use amongst children - such as conker, kingfisher or bramble - and bring them back to life, through the magical paintings of Jackie Morris and the 'spell poems' of Robert Macfarlane. Words allow us to give things names - from emotions to birds, plants and animals. Without the right words we cannot name, love, or - ultimately - save them.
This is a really important book. A generational book.
Inspired by Jane Beaton's campaign - to get a copy into every primary school in Scotland - we have decided to do something similar, and get a copy into every primary school in Gloucestershire.
Depending on how you count them, there are roughly 250 primary schools in the county. We want all primary age children in Gloucestershire to have the chance to share in what this book has to offer. £5000 should allow us to make sure that all of these children at least has a chance of experiencing what this book has to offer.
If we come in under budget, or over achieve on the target, any surplus money will go towards a fund for extra books for our most local schools.
