To buy a copy of The Lost Spells for every Doncaster primary school to facilitate poetry, art & exploration of the local natural world
by Phil Sheppard in Doncaster, England, United Kingdom
On the 30th November 2020 we'd raised £745 with 13 supporters in 14 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.
Any extra money will buy copies of the book for Doncaster Libraries (including the new Danum Library, opening 2021) as well as donations of the book to local food banks.
Lockdowns have led to a resurgence of local wildlife as well as increased interest from families and educators as people spend more time exploring their local area.
Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris's books have been hugely successful as people from around the world find themselves reconnecting with nature. Now we want to buy a copy of new book 'The Lost Spells' for every primary school in Doncaster. This will allow teachers to inspire children to explore their local natural areas either with school or through home learning. Of course, exploring nature will also improve mental health and well-being, as well as improving relationships between family and friends if spending time outdoors during isolation.
Inspired by Jane Beaton's campaign in early 2018, to get a copy of The Lost Words into every primary school in Scotland, we hope to get a copy of this new book into every school in Doncaster.
We would love all primary age children in Doncaster to have the opportunity to discover and share what this book has to offer. The Lost Spells is a book to be shared, to delight and inspire children, the 'spells' and the wonderful illustrations are sure to catch the imagination of all who read it.
Penguin books is offering a special discount for this project which means that each copy will cost us £7.50 (RRP £14 per copy). The total cost, including postage and packing cost, will be £945. Following a very generous donation from Rotary Clubs of Doncaster St Leger and Doncaster, we are now looking for the other half of the cost. Anyone preferring to donate directly should send a cheque to the Treasurer, Rotary Club of Doncaster St Leger at 3 Croft Drive, Tickhill, Doncaster DN11 9UL., making cheques payable to Doncaster St Leger Rotary Club 2.
Please, if you can, support this campaign and give the children of Doncaster a chance to bring these ‘Lost Words’ back to life during these difficult times.
