We're organising the first ever London Choro Festival. A weekend of amazing choro performances, workshops and rodas. Help us make it happen!

We are putting on the first ever London Choro Festival!

Choro is one of the richest, liveliest, most soulful genres of Brazilian music. If you don’t already know about choro, imagine the playful virtuosity of ragtime, the delicacy of classical music, the spontaneity of jazz, the warm togetherness of a folk session, and infectious African-influenced rhythms – and wrap it all up in a uniquely Brazilian package. That’s choro!

Choro has been growing in popularity in London, with more and more happening around the city. Every week you can find opportunities to attend a roda de choro, the traditional gatherings of musicians and music-lovers where choro is nurtured and shared.

That’s why now is a great time to launch the first London Choro Festival – taking place from September 26th to 28th this year.

An amazing programme of artists is lined up to play across the weekend:

  • Choro de Rua – a dynamic duo from Bologna, featuring Marco Ruviaro and Barbara Piperno;
  • Família Pádua – a vibrant ensemble of Brazilian relatives, based in Vienna;
  • Brasília em Trio - a new trio comprised of Márcio Marinho, Victor Angeleas and Pablo Fagundes;
  • and London's very own Alvorada, who will present their uniquely crafted brand of original Brazilian music.

There’ll be workshops taking place in the daytimes, delivered by the artists, covering a range of topics for everyone from beginners to more experienced players. The weekend will also include an official festival roda de choro for everyone to join. The festival will take place in and around Dalston – one of the liveliest and vibrant cultural areas in London. The main shows will take place at Copper Cats, a stylish venue at the heart of the local scene.

We are reaching out now to ask for your support to help us fund the festival, so that we can make it as special an event as we know it can be. The money we raise will be used to cover the artists fees, venue costs, advertising, and general costs of running the festival. We are hoping to make this festival an annual event. For that to happen, we need this first edition to be a success!

If you already know and love choro, if you care about sharing Brazilian music and culture, or if you’re new to choro and want to get more into it  - please consider supporting us and helping to put on an amazing festival!
