To create a biodiverse, sensory garden in an area which is currently 'scrub', making a place for visitors to sit/relax and enjoy bird song
by Lancashire Mining Museum Limited in Manchester, Greater Manchester, United Kingdom
The overall project will cost approx £5500 with the extra funding we will be able to complete our project in one season. No need for labour costs, volunteers give their time for free.
Volunteers from the Mining Museum will collaborate with Natures Den Forest School and Green Crew to create a peaceful sensory garden. This will allow visitors and the wider community to engage with wildlife and nature, and make the site more climate resilient.
We will create interlocking hexagonal raised beds utilising sleepers which are then in keeping with the industrial nature of the site, but also long lasting. Planting will be perennial and will include more trees/shrubs plus herbs which can be harvested for use in teas etc.
Seating will be incorporated so visitors can pause and enjoy the space which will feel at one with nature.
The intention is that it will appeal to all the senses. Sound with the wind through the trees which are the backdrop along with the birdsong. Taste from the edible herbs. Sight with colours in a primarily green backdrop. Touch in the variety of leaves some of which will be highly tactile and of course release scents which along with flowers will smell.
Renaturing our urban spaces not only benefits wildlife, but also people. Spending time in nature helps health / wellness and builds resilience.
Work in clearing the site has commenced, but we need funding to continue. Please help
