I’m David and I play for the Manchester Village Spartans rugby team. Despite being a baby Spartan (in my first season), I’ll be taking part in raising money to send our fellow Spartans to Brisbane, Australia, to play for the Bingham Cup!
The Bingham Cup is the world championship of inclusive rugby, which brings together teams from across the globe. It is named in honour of Mark Bingham, an incredible rugby player and proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community. Mark, tragically, lost his life onboard United Flight 93 during the September 11 attacks in 2001. Following his death, the tournament was established to maintain Mark’s legacy of courage and community.
As the largest amateur rugby tournament of its kind, the Bingham Cup is more than just competition. It champions diversity, promotes inclusion, and creates a welcoming space for all LGBTQIA+ players and their allies. By challenging stereotypes and fostering acceptance, it plays a vital role in making rugby more inclusive for everyone.
I’ll be travelling to the ancient home of our namesakes and will take on the challenge of sailing a small yacht from Athens, around the Peloponnese to the Island of Kefalonia over the course of ten days. With a small crew of three: Zed our guiding captain, myself, and Tyga, we will be voyaging through the Aegean and into the Ionian Sea.
Our voyage will require us to learn the ropes of nautical navigation and seamanship over the course of over 60 hours of open-water sailing - we have quite the distance to cover. Our time at sea will put our whole crew to the test, especially those of us who have shakier sea-legs than others… Don’t worry, though. I’m determined to tackle everything the ocean will throw at us, with just as much passion as we have on the pitch!
We can’t wait to take on this monumental challenge and hope that, through channelling the Bingham spirit, we can inspire our community to help us make them proud and send our incredible Spartans to Brisbane this August! Every contribution makes a real difference.
