Who are we?
South Skye Community Campus SCIO is a newly formed charity established to increase sporting and recreational opportunities for south Skye and the wider Skye and Lochalsh communities. South Skye is an area that has had minimal investment in sporting and recreational facilities over the years.
Our plans are not just a want, but something we desperately need, and we are here to make sure it happens.
Why are we crowdfunding?
South Skye is craving increased sporting facilities and for too long has had sub-standard amenities neglecting the sporting needs of our area.
Following extensive consultation carried out by our community working group and more recently by SSCC we will develop our sports and recreational community facilities through a phased approach.
Phase one is an all-weather astro pitch which will be transformational in terms of availability, increased opportunity for new sports and the reduction in our community carbon footprint. Our current grass pitch is only usable during the summer months, and with increased climate change pressures, even the summer has its challenges. The new facility will revolutionise our community’s ability to participate in inclusive sport.
Thus far, we have raised £316,000 including a recent Sport Scotland funding bid, however, we need a further £500,000 to complete phase one and deliver the much-needed all-weather sports pitch. At SSCC, we are looking at a variety of funders, however the more match funding we can raise the better. So we are aiming to raise enough funds to cover the cost of Lights for our astro pitch.
It’s time for our communities to have the facilities it deserves and with your help, we will ensure it happens.
How we’ll spend the money raised
These funds will go directly to the construction of the new South Skye Community Campus all-weather astro pitch project. Specifically to raise funds to cover the cost of lights for the pitch.
Community impact
The overall community impact of this project will be massive and the positive impact, both physically and mentally for our area is difficult to measure. The new facility will allow a changed landscape for our community ensuring that children, young people and adults can fulfil their sporting potential, and the area can offer a wide array of physical activity options, which is something it cannot achieve at present.
Here are a few examples of why this project will have major benefits on our community:
- Reduced travel – some children and adults are currently travelling over 120 miles weekly to take part in sport, as well as the volunteer coaches that lead the sessions. This travel has physical, mental, environmental and economical implications on those involved. It also leads to these pressures meaning less involvement or lack of coaches that cannot commit.
- Increased sporting provision – at present, the facilities only cater for football. This new facility will mean that we can have increased football available, as well as shinty, rugby, hockey and potential other sports, both for children and adults.
- Increased mental and physical health – it has been proven that taking part in physical activity can have positive impact physical and mental health of those taking part. This will mean people can socialise in the sport of their choice and have easier access to it. It will mean a healthier community which has an endless amount of benefits.
- Environmental – we currently have to travel a substantial distance to take part in sport, and this facility will reduce the environmental impact of our community.
