Project aim

Life Through The Lens is a participatory Photography project where we teach a Photography course to destitute boys in Udaipur, India

About the project

Life Through The Lens is a Photography project in Udaipur, Rajasthan, where we teach Photography to children in a  home for destitute boys. One reason is because they don't have any creativity in their education and we believe it is so important for young people to experience this. The second reason is because we ant these boys to be able to access Photogrpahy to be able to represent themselves to the rest of the world. Too often charities and organisations from the west come over with their technology and document how they see poverty and these people lives and bring this back to the UK This is often not a true representation of this country or those peoples lives; too often they depict poverty in a negative way. Our project is aimed at giving the boys the tools they need and teaching them to use, to be able to show themselves and their lives to the rest of the world in a way that they choose. After running each course we bring their work back to the UK and exhibit their work online and in London. We are looking to buy a set of around 18 working digital cameras for the boys to practice Photography on for the project.Currently the cameras we are using (which have all been kindly donated by individuals) are no longer suitable for their purpose. They are all very old (some are as much as 9 years old) and lots are very faulty. The photographs the boys can take are very limited in quality and quantity and it makes teaching the workshops more difficult than it should be.If we can do this we would be creating a platform, through Photography, to give people their own voice and be able to represent themselves who would otherwise not be able to.
