Help Liberty uncover injustice and hold the powerful to account with our in-depth investigations.

Since 2019, Liberty’s investigative journalism unit Liberty Investigates has worked to publish the kind of stories that don’t normally see the light of day. We’ve exposed wrongdoing and revealed dark truths those in power would prefer to keep hidden.

We want to keep delivering more hard-hitting, public interest journalism which empowers people to defend their rights and sparks change.

We’ve got exciting plans – and we need to raise £20,000 to make sure we can deliver. Please donate to help us reach our target!

Liberty Investigates has already revealed grotesque human rights abuses at the heart of the British state. We’ve recently reported on a spate of suicides in asylum seeker accommodation, universities and police secretly spying on Gaza student protesters, and use of a “dangerous” facial recognition search engine – to name just a few.

We’ve revealed some of the British establishment’s darkest secrets:

  • Creating our Asylum Seeker Memorial Project – a website bearing witness to the stories of people who have died in Home Office accommodation since 2016.
  • Uncovering evidence the UK wrongly deported a Sudanese survivor of torture and trafficking, which led to former Home Secretary Priti Patel being ordered by a Judge to bring him back.
  • Forcing the Metropolitan Police to backtrack on a planned halt to the collection of ethnicity data on vehicle stops. This was despite Black and Asian people being stopped at higher rates than white British people.
  • Having our investigations splashed across the front pages of some of the UK’s major newspapers including The Observer and The i. This is alongside publishing stories with ITV News, Channel 4 news, The Guardian, the Telegraph, The BBC and the New York Times.
  • Reaching the finals of prestigious journalism awards such as The Orwell Prize for Exposing Britain’s Social Evils 2023 and being shortlisted for Private Eye’s Paul Foot Award 2022 for investigative and campaigning journalism.

Our investigations have changed media narratives on issues from migration to policing to data privacy. They have helped everyone - from local campaign groups to MPs at Westminster – to ask searching questions of those in power.

But in a world of 24-hour news cycles and cuts to newsrooms, it is vital that we keep up the painstaking work of investigative journalism. It takes time, patience and money to pull off the kind of fearless investigation that really makes a difference.

Liberty Investigates is special. We’re fully independent and led by our founding mission to “uncover injustice, hold the powerful to account and to empower others to defend their own rights, and those of their friends, families and communities”. We do this by producing rigorous, impartial and credible journalism.

To keep our brand of powerful investigative journalism alive, we need your support – now more than ever.

We’ve had some huge successes, but there is always more to do.

We’re aiming to partner with a broader range of media outlets across the political spectrum. We want to reach more people than ever before and have a greater impact with our cutting-edge investigations.

We are planning ambitious investigations in the areas of policing, criminal justice and protest rights – to expose more discrimination and abuses of power.

Working more closely with local news outlets, we want to build a network of likeminded journalists in every part of the UK to show the local impacts of the injustices we report on.

We can only do all this with your support. If you can, please chip in now to help us reach our fundraising target of £20,000!
