We will be empowering migrant youth to explore what career fulfilment means for them, whilst addressing traditional family pressures.
Working on what we love doing, or issues that we care about is good for us. Unfortunately, our reality is that many young people receive immense pressure from our families to follow well respected, traditional careers: a doctor, lawyer or teacher. Although well intentioned, it doesn't take into account their skills or character strengths. Evidence shows this can be quite damaging in the long term.
Through working with schools we have learned they are aware of parental pressure young adults experience, especially from minority communities. However, they don’t want to ‘interfere’ with family relations. As a social enterprise deeply rooted in our community, we are able to build strong bridges between young adults and their elders. Your donations will enable us to deepen and enrich our services to help so many more young people to reach their full potential.

WHAT is Kurdish House London?
Kurdish House London is a network of Kurdish young people and entrepreneurs working on the socio-economic wellbeing of the community. Our work is educational; we have no political or religious agenda- we bring together people to connect, collaborate and create. We encourage and support entrepreneurship and that people find truly fulfilling careers- according to their own criteria. We see how energising our work is as a catalyst to breaking down financial and identity barriers.
Last year, we tested a series of online workshops, reaching 60 Kurdish young adults. Participants showed an increase in confidence to explore many aspects of their career and personal development which they hadn't experienced before. We did this through drawing from philosophical concepts, Kurdish metaphor and scientific research. This year, we are taking things deeper, running workshops with schools and institutions, such as through London Academy of Excellence and their feeder schools.

WHAT will the funds support?
The young adults in many migrant communities are often worried about the perceptions of their families and society. So we have now re-designed our employability workshops to engage families in a young person's work and career decisions - especially when they are exploring non-traditional careers.
Your donations will allow us to increase the working life quality of dozens of Kurdish young people. As well as, employ a programme manager to co-create and coordinate employability offerings with local partner organisations- up from four organisations in 2021 to six in 2022. This includes academies and the Kurdish Advice Centre. Crucially, your donations will allow the future of a marginalised community burdened with rigid career expectations and pressures- to explore what truly fulfils them without feeling shameful or scared.

WHO does it benefit?
You may not be Kurdish, but still recognise the issue of parental pressure to follow a well respected and traditional career. All of our materials will be shared online and available for your community to benefit from them. We are running workshops for young adults (18-30) in 2022 in London, Manchester and Derby. The more funds we raise, the more young people will live a life that fulfils them as people.
