Lichfield And Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust Limited

RCN 702429, Lichfield

Promoting restoration of both the Wyrley & Essington Canal from Ogley Junction to Huddlesford Junction (now known as the "Lichfield Canal") and the Hatherton Branch of the Staffs & Worcs Canal including constructing a new navigable link with the northern Birmingham Canal Navigations, thus revitalising over 40 miles of under-used Midlands waterways.

We are a volunteer-lead charity restoring dedicated to restoring the historic Lichfield and Hatherton Canals for the benefit of local people, wildlife, and making them navigable again - connecting them back to the Birmingham Canals Navigations.

Our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. From engineering and construction to ecology, fundraising and community engagement, their skills and passion have brought long‑lost sections of canal back to life. Thanks to their dedication — and the generosity of our supporters — we’ve already delivered several landmark achievements:

  • Darnford Moors Ecology Park - now a thriving wetland corridor supporting birds, insects, and native plants.
  • Borrowcop Locks Canal Park - a lovely blue-green space enjoyed by walkers, families, and wildlife.
  • Major engineering milestones including the Lichfield Canal Aqueduct over the M6Toll Road and the David Suchet Tunnel under the A5 near Cannock.
  • Strong partnerships with local councils, businesses, and national bodies.
  • Recognition through regional and national awards - such as the Queens Award for Voluntary Service and the Lichfield Beacon Award, celebrating both our environmental impact and the exceptional commitment of our volunteers.

Every metre restored is a testament to the power of community. By donating or fundraising for us, you’ll be part of a story that’s reshaping Lichfield’s landscape and preserving its heritage for generations to come.

And as a completely volunteer‑run charity with no paid staff, every donation goes directly into our restoration funds. This means you can be confident that your contribution makes a real, tangible difference on the ground - from materials and machinery to habitat creation and heritage preservation.
