Aim
To fund the legal challenge against the Solicitors' Regulatory Authority's treatment of the solicitor who attempted suicide.

I’m launching this fundraiser because a solicitor in our profession has described something that should concern all of us: after surviving a suicide attempt, they say restrictions were placed on their practising certificate which they believe have made it effectively impossible for them to work. Their account has prompted a huge outpouring of support online, and it has sparked a wider conversation about mental health, stigma, and fairness in professional regulation.
This fundraiser is not about online outrage or “trial by social media”. It’s about something much more constructive and important: ensuring that an anonymous solicitor can access proper legal representation to challenge decisions that they believe are wrong, and to do so through the appropriate legal and regulatory channels.
Whatever views people hold about the underlying facts, everyone should be able to agree on this:
- people experiencing mental ill health should not be deterred from seeking help, and
- decisions with life-changing professional consequences should be capable of being properly tested, with due process, evidence, and independent scrutiny.
My vision
My hope is that we can help create a profession where:
- asking for help is not treated as a risk to your career,
- mental health is addressed with compassion and evidence, not stigma, and
- regulatory decisions are made (and, where necessary, challenged) transparently and fairly.
This fundraiser is a practical way to turn support into meaningful action: helping one individual get the legal support they need, and—by doing so—supporting a wider message that surviving a crisis should not become a professional life sentence.
How the money will be used
All funds raised will go towards supporting the anonymous solicitor’s legal costs in challenging the restrictions placed on their practising certificate, including:
- Legal fees (solicitors and/or counsel as required)
- Court/tribunal fees and disbursements (where applicable)
- Necessary expert evidence or reports (if advised and appropriate)
- A contingency for potential adverse costs (if there is an order to pay the other side’s costs)
I am organising this fundraiser to help the anonymous solicitor access representation and reduce the financial fear that can prevent someone from asserting their rights. I will provide updates where I can, while prioritising the solicitor’s anonymity, privacy, and wellbeing.
If there is any surplus
If, after legal fees and any costs exposure are covered, there is a surplus, it will be donated 50/50 to:
- Advocate (the pro bono charity connecting people to legal help), and
- LawCare (the mental health charity for the legal sector).
