Aim

Give 120 refugees the laptops they need to start their university courses this September

Education is a tool for change. For refugees, it’s a chance to get their lives back on track. Hundreds of refugees in the UK have overcome multiple barriers to get to where they are today. They have worked incredibly hard to secure a place at university and have their whole lives ahead of them.

Unfortunately, hundreds of refugees in the UK are without the laptops and internet connectivity they need to start their courses and participate fully at university. Without a laptop, they cannot formally enrol, attend online lectures, undertake research or submit their assignments. Refugees do NOT receive devices from the government.

Digital inclusion solves this problem. It’s a key which helps refugees unlock their own futures.

Screen Share is the leading refugee digital inclusion charity. We invest in refugees’ digital capability so they can reach their full potential, on their own terms. We provide laptops, phones, tablets, digital skills training and IT repair for those who can’t afford it.

We need your help to ensure the 120 refugees who urgently need a laptop can start their courses on time.

Your donation will:

1. Fund the collection, refurbishment and postage of 120 laptops across the country to refugees waiting to start their course. We collect devices from businesses and corporates. Screen Share's refugee volunteers repair and refurbish them with new hardware and software. Then we post them out to refugees in need in time for the beginning of term.

2. We will also deliver dozens of online and in-person digital skills training sessions for this group, so refugees have the confidence to create and format their documents, draft a professional email, understand the difference between high-quality research and fake news, and navigate the internet safely. Based on a refugee-specific digital curriculum co-designed by refugees, we will provide on-the-ground skills training sessions and online ‘refresher sessions’. With your support, we will make sure refugees get the digital support they need to thrive.

How we will spend your donation:

  • £15 buys a new charger for a laptop - we receive lots of laptop donations, but not many chargers
  • £30 buys a new keyboard or trackpad to repair a laptop which would otherwise end up in landfill
  • £84 buys a fully refurbished and ready-to-go laptop for a refugee in time for their course
  • £150 covers the cost of one online ‘refresher session’ where our refugees ask questions, share knowledge and develop their digital skills

Digital inclusion gives refugees the power to change their own lives. Refugees overcome huge barriers to reach safety in the UK. Today, a laptop shouldn’t be another.

_________

Since Screen Share was set up in 2021, we have provided thousands of refugees with digital support. Some refugees we meet need intensive assistance to understand the digital world, submit documents and access other support services. Others are highly skilled already, but cannot afford a device or internet connectivity.

We are a growing charity committed to advancing the digital capabilities of refugees in the UK. We believe in a future where every refugee in the UK has the digital tools and confidence to flourish in a connected world.

We take your decision to donate to Screen Share very seriously. We are a young and dynamic organisation committed to converting your generosity into long-lasting change for the refugees we exist to support. We will use your donation carefully, considerately and transparently.
