Aim

Since 2009 we have been working to bring nature into local classrooms, this money will help bring the classroom to nature

“No-one will protect what they don’t care about; and no-one will care about what they have never experienced” – David Attenbrough

At Tees Rivers Trust our ultimate purpose is to restore and protect the water environment and heritage of the Tees and its tributaries. So we spend considerable time and effort in restoring habitat and river environments but, however important this work is, without showing people why this is vital work and how it needs to be looked after, our efforts may be wasted.

We want to see communities along the Tees enjoying their river, from source to sea, and understanding how everything along the river is interconnected. One action on the river at source can have a massive impact in the estuary.

We are raising funds to enable us to cover the costs of travel for school groups from all over the Tees to come to a Coast or River Lab site and experience what a river should and can do. Unfortunately travel costs are a huge barrier for schools arranging visits for class groups. We hope to raise enough funding to pay for 10 school trips to our Coast or River sites and let children explore their river, be it dipping in the stream for fly larva or dipping in a rockpool for shrimp.

We also want to be able to buy outdoor education equipment, small mini beast microscopes, water test kits, weather proof clipboards and nets for dipping. Everyone should have the opportunity to get to safely explore local nature, with this funding we hope to overcome barriers to this.

For example:

£400 will cover the cost of a bus for one school trip

£20 will buy equipment for outdoor nature art sessions

£15 buys 5 mini lab kits for investigating the river

£10 buys 10 mini beast magnifiers
