Aim: Support a new social enterprise in Chesterfield, improving wellbeing through yoga, movement & mindfulness.
Kula is a new community-space opening in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.
Our mission is to cultivate physical, mental and emotional wellbeing in our local community.
How?
Yoga & movement
For us, yoga & movement isn't just about fitness. It's about functional mobility. Whether that's working towards being able to bend over to tie your shoelaces, or complimenting your ultra-marathon training. Our role is to keep people active and mobile, balancing the body.
We'll offer a variety of classes to help our community stay mobile:
Mindfulness
In an increasingly distracted society, mindfulness is a vital tool to help manage stress and anxiety. Yet there are often barriers to people being able to learn the techniques. Apps cost a monthly subscription and require a smartphone or digital access. Something many can't afford or don't have.
Our community will benefit from our classes & workshops, as they’ll get taught the tools to be able to self-direct their practice, without requiring technology. They’ll learn mindfulness techniques that they can take with them to live happier and calmer lives.
Hi 👋🏼 we're the team behind Kula.
Bronwyn loves being outdoors and is a Yoga teacher specialising in embodied movement and Trauma Informed teaching. She believes that as we become more in-tune with our bodies, we can start to embrace ourselves better, grow and heal. Bronwyn will lead the teaching team at Kula.
Kevin is a climber and writer, fascinated by how we can be happier by living more intentionally. He's meditated since 2013, studied simple living and has done a 10-day Vipassana silent meditation course. Kevin focuses on the community side of things at Kula.
There's an old Anatolian tradition. When you're buying a loaf of bread at the bakery, you can buy an extra loaf that gets bagged and hung on a hook in the shop. When someone in need comes by, they can ask if there's any bread on the hook. If so, the bread is shared.
Classes at Kula are paid for, but like at the bakery, there's a hook on the wall. We're offering subsidised classes to those in need, and holding regular free classes to bring wellbeing within reach to more people in our community.
We're a Community Interest Company, which means Kula's legal obligation is to serve our community (not our pockets). As a CIC, Kula's assets are locked and preserved for the benefit of the community, even if we close. This really is the best way we can ensure we're making a positive impact.
We've raised about 80% of the money we need to successfully launch Kula, from personal savings and support from family.
This campaign is to get us to 100%.
