After more than a dozen years working as a financial advisor at Assante, Melissa Chung jolted her career. She earned an MBA at Cornell, and came back to Toronto with fresh enthusiasm and a big new idea. Together with one of her Cornell classmates, she founded Krippit --- a startup that produces high-heel protectors via 3D printing. “We were trying to solve our own problems, to be honest,” she laughs. Melissa attended and completed a rigorous startup accelerator through the Founders Institute, and then enrolled in the GPLLM. All while managing her day job at Assante in Toronto.
One of my greatest strengths is innovation, which I believe is a cornerstone of any successful enterprise. I am energized by working in cross-functional teams to solve complex problems, and I enjoy the communication challenge inherent in these types of groups.
My father immigrated to Canada from Hong Kong in 1967 with only $100 in his pocket. He slept on the grounds of the restaurant where he worked as a waiter to save money. He was successful in drawing upon his analytical skills, business instincts, vision, leadership, and entrepreneurial focus to develop a unique idea in an untapped market. My dad always has a saying that anyone can become a billionaire, just think of a $1 idea that everyone in China needs!
kirppit follows many of the same principles except that half the population (males) have been left. So we decided to add colours and charms and customization options to make up for the rest o the profits.
With our patented design, we are extremely excited to be featured in this year's Queen's plate event in Toronto. We are teaming up with AMX and providing a selected few among the 36,000 attendees with our product.
Out unique experience has given us the chance to showcase the power of 3D printing and problems that it can solve. We have been adding a blockchain element to our supply chain. We have used 3D printed NFC tags linked on a blockchain to provide a level of authenticity, especially during the manufacturing phase in China.
