With the backing of the community we're turning a disused space into a fully equipped gym for residents and visitors and we need your help!
Knoydart is a community-owned peninsula renowned for its rugged and majestic landscape. We're only accessible by boat or a 2-day hike, so getting to a gym or even a GP, hospital or physio can be an ordeal.
In a place where we rely so heavily on one another, our health really is our wealth. The longer the community can stay physically fit and active, the more we all stand to gain.
We're active people already - we're deer stalkers, tree planters, growers, crofters, builders and foresters, and our shopkeepers, posties and bar and hospitality staff are on their feet all day too. When deliveries arrive it is all hands on deck to unload the boat. We're a resilient bunch but there's huge appetite for a dedicated space to get strong and stay strong.
If you've visited before, you may have noticed how inclement and wild the weather can get. It isn't always inspiring or possible to be active outdoors, and the boats to Mallaig can be cancelled during poor weather.
A strength training gym means we can remain injury free, rehabilitate from injuries, get strong, stay strong and increase muscle mass and bone density so we stay well as we age. A community gym will also provide a motivational community around fitness, and a social space away from the best pub in the world. If you don't live here, you'll be able to use it when you visit, too.
Surveyed residents are very enthusiastic about building a gym. To show buy-in we are asking the community to contribute their membership fees in advance, but any further help and support will mean we can establish a gym which is fit-for-purpose from the very start.
We will use the funding to transform the space, to buy equipment, cover overheads like insurance and utilities, and train local residents to become personal trainers so that we can keep the skillset local. There is appetite for group training, suggested workouts, and even a training plan to lead to a guided walk up a local munro!
A donation of any amount is greatly appreciated, and do peruse our rewards where you can get your hands on some sweet merch, or sponsor some of our bigger spends.
Thank you!
