Aim

This prize draw will raise money to help to purchase the large oak timbers we need to continue to build the Saxon Ship.

The Prize

👸 What better way to celebrate all things Saxon, than by being treated like a King or Queen for the day!  One of the rewards from our successful crowdfunder earlier this year was the opportunity to be King or Queen for a day. 🤴

As we approach Christmas and the Winter Solstice, we are running a prize draw to win this amazing opportunity to immerse yourself in the history of Sutton Hoo and our reconstruction project.

The prizewinner can bring a friend or relative to Woodbridge to immerse themselves in the project. We will create a tailored visit just for you, including working alongside our shipbuilders, finding out more about the traditional tools and processes we use to build the ship and perhaps trying your hand with one of the axes. The prize also includes a trip to the National Trust Site at Sutton Hoo for a guided tour with our knowledgeable trustees and an overnight stay in the lovely town of Woodbridge.

Whether you love the history, the archaeology, the woodworking and shipbuilding skills or you just want to be part of this historical project, we will tailor the day's activities just for you and will make sure you have a right royal visit!

(If you can't stand the suspense there is an option to just sign up for a day for £5000 and avoid the draw!)

The Cause

We rarely get a chance to make history and build a legacy for future generations. The extraordinary tale of uncovering an immense Anglo-Saxon King's burial ship and its golden treasure at Sutton Hoo is a story for all ages, recounted in the Netflix film 'The Dig'. The Sutton Hoo Ship's Company has taken on the iconic task of reconstructing and taking to sea, a copy of the ship buried at Sutton Hoo in around 625 and possibly the grave of King Raedwald.

The ship is being built as authentically as possible in Woodbridge, Suffolk, less than a mile as the crow flies from where the original ship was buried. Our many local volunteers are using traditional tools and a plan based on the archaeological evidence from the site, plus modern-day research techniques to construct the ship.

The money raised from this prize draw will ensure the ship's planking will be completed early next year.

The draw will be held on January 1 2024 and the winner will be notified by email.
