To build an amazing community driven skatepark for: Skateboards, scooters and BMX's! Please support us and donate!

by Madron Parish Council in Penzance, Cornwall, United Kingdom

Who are we?

We are a local parish council in the heart of the community. We want to bring the playing field back to life! This project is to create something special for the community. The project was launched from an open day where the community advised the parish council, a skatepark was their number 1 priority! Through consultation the design below is what the new skatepark will look like, designed entirely through consultation with the public.1739787349_madron_skatepark_spec.jpg

Why are we crowdfunding?

We have been working on this project for many years and having secured planning permission, working alongside a world renowned skatepark designer have secured some funding. We are now crowd funding to go towards the remaining funds needed to create this amazing sports facility for the community. The picture below shows the current facilities, which have not kept up with the growing community. Which is why we want to create this amazing sports facility for the community. There will still be a full size footbath pitch and lots of green space as well as the children's play area.

Help us build a brilliant new skatepark for Skaters, BMXers and Scooters to give our community the opportunities they deserve.

How we’ll spend the money raised

All the money raised will go towards delivering the skatepark and new vehicular access. We have been applying for funding over the past 18 months and have been successful in securing £15,000 from the Sport England Movement Fund. The criteria for which is to match the £15,000 awarded with a further £15,000 through a crowd funding campaign. This campaign along with other funding currently being applied for will help turn this project into a reality.

If you are reading this with a view to support us, please do. Any additional funds we can raise here will make a real difference to the project as we need to make sure we have enough funds to cover all the costs to be incurred. It would be great to hit the £15K target.

Do tell your friends, family and colleagues – who may have been meaning to donate – to pop on here and give what they can.

Community impact

Madron is a village in West Penwith, Cornwall, an area of high social deprivation. There are very few local facilities for young people to give them things to do. Which sadly has resulted in anti-social behaviour and vandalism.

It's ideally situated in a traffic-free location and is the perfect place for gathering, a place to gain new skills, learn, develop, build new relationships and improve health and wellbeing

This facility will help bring the community and wider area together in a beautiful green space to be physically and socially active. There will be no barriers. This space has failed to keep pace with the growing demand for modern recreational facilities that can cater to our diverse and vibrant local community. The redevelopment of the King George V playing field skatepark is more than just a construction project - it's about reigniting our community spirit, encouraging inclusion, promoting physical and mental activity, and giving residents of Madron and further a field a safe space to express themselves freely, and a place to be proud of.

Skateboarding and BMX riding are Olympic sports and the profile has increased, meaning many more individuals have been inspired to get involved and try these sports out.

New research has also identified the multiple benefits:

“Skateboarding is well known for its physical health benefits, but a recent study has shown that individuals who partake in skating stated that they do so to reduce boredom, provide them with escapism, help them to build confidence and use skateboarding as a coping mechanism for their emotions” Skateboard GB

Benefits to this skatepark:

  • Provide an inclusive, safer community place that's free to all
  • Opportunity to improve health and wellbeing
  • Multi-use facilities
  • Multi-generational engagement opportunities
  • Reduce anti-social behaviour and minor crime
  • Reduce social isolation in the community
  • Access to quality sporting facilities in a remote area
