Aim

Groovy Movies is an animation project for all year 5 pupils at Kelvin Grove, made in collaboration with older members of the community.

Kelvin Grove's Groovy Movie makers, are Year 5 pupils at an amazing primary school in Sydenham, Lewisham. If we raise our target we have the chance to apply to the Lewisham Festival fund, and if we are succesful they will fund 70% of the project!

The aim of this project is for all Year 5 pupils to produce three  x 5 minute animated films, one per class. We will work in collaboration with some elderly local residents and find out about what life was like when they were young. Children will make sound recordings of these anecdotes and a 5 minute edited sound track will be the basis of the films. Working in groups of 3 or 4, pupils will produce 30 seconds of animation each, in different techniques. These scenes will be edited together and the animation will illustrate the voice over soundtrack of the contributors stories and memories.

The pupils have already had a taste of animation in a previous  project, where they used plastecine models and made up their own stories. You can see these films on the Kelvin Grove Vimeo page https://vimeo.com/user12427784

The Kelvin Grove Groovy Movie project will build on the skills pupils already have, and they will learn more advanced techniques and gain more of an insight into the filmmaking process. The films will be mixed media and consist of different techniques including  cut out animation, stop motion, lip synch, acting infront of a green screen with animated backgrounds and animating chalk drawings on the gound. Pupils will edit their own films, adding the voice over, sound effects and music. During the project the Year 5 Teachers and Teaching Assistant's will be massively involved and will receive additional training so that they can develop the skills needed to run these kinds of projects in the future with other classes and year groups. We will also encourage any parent volunteers to get involved  in the project too!

Kelvin Grove is a very diverse and inclusive school, that is full of creative children.  Animation is so beneficial to all areas of learning, including Maths, English and Art. It is especially valuable for primary school children and gives them confidence and a sense of pride in what they have achieved.

There are so many cuts to Arts funding in education that it's rare for children to have an opportunity like this. Equipped with new skills, theTeachers and Teaching Assistants at Kelvin Grove, could use animation and filmmaking more in their projects. The film industry needs to be more diverse, so what better time to start learning film making than in Primary School. Imagine what great filmmakers our pupils could be at 18 if they continue making films!
