Aim

Extreme weather makes The Bike Station’s mission even more important- support us to get more people using sustainable and joyful transport.

August in Edinburgh is always busy!! - but this August was also difficult. Will you help us to raise £10,000 to ensure more people can choose cycling?

August is one of our busiest times at The Bike Station- especially in Tollcross. Our branch is buzzing as more people want to get moving on two wheels. We refurbish over 125 bikes in the month. Downstairs in the tiny but mighty Tollcross workshop, our amazing mechanics work their magic and dozens of high quality lovingly refurbished bikes. For August and September everyone is on full speed to keep up with demand.

That is, until extreme weather brings everything to a stop.

On 19 August, the UK was hit by extremely wet weather and Edinburgh saw widespread flash flooding. The water was ankle-deep on South Bridge, the steps on Victoria Street were a waterfall, and our beloved basement workshop didn’t fare any better. We were forced to down tools and shut our doors for eight days to look after our team, clean up, replace tools and repair our workshop at the Tollcross branch.

Extreme weather is predicted to continue and worsen due to climate change - we are in the midst of the worst El Nino for over one thousand years. This extreme weather event makes us more determined than ever to carry on our work helping everyone to enjoy a sustainable, and joyful, mode of transport.

Thanks to a dedicated and gargantuan effort by The Bike Station team, we have been able to rebuild our workshop in record time. We’re so proud to have opened the doors to Tollcross again, but the work isn’t finished yet. Eight days of closure in our busiest time has a big impact - August should be busier than July, but this closure has led to around a 40% drop in the people getting on bikes, and an approximate 30% drop in the number of bikes refurbished at Tollcross this month compared to last. Not to mention thousands of pounds in lost revenues which help us to run our community programme, helping kids and adults from all walks of life to discover freedom on two wheels.

By donating to our crowdfunder, you can help us to keep supporting cycling across Scotland - not just saving bikes from landfill, but offering a free kids bike library, cycling confidence and bike maintenance skills and much more.
