New Lane, Holgate is home to a fantastic community sports club
with Rugby, Football and Netball to name a few of the sports that call the pitches and fantastic clubhouse, home. We look to keep membership prices affordable and the sports inclusive so that we can serve the whole community with excellent sporting opportunities.
Like many other organisations, the club is being hugely hit by the price increases relating to the cost of living crisis. Over the past few years we have been exploring various options for replacing our current expensive floodlights with LED floodlights, sadly this now seems even more unattainable, due to the increase in material costs involved in completing such a project. One of our pitches has had to be completely switched off this year because of the safety (linked to age) of the lights and the cost of the electricity associated.
This has impacted a lot of teams during these autumnal/winter months. We have 1000's of young people and adults using our facilities each week and think we may be at a safety tipping point of being able to continue to provide some of these services. We really don't want to have to reduce the time allowed on our site based on keeping the lights on or turning them off.
The last thing we want to have to do is increase our membership payments to the point that families and individuals are paying to simply cover the rising costs!
Replace our current floodlights with LED energy efficient heads and new stands would significantly reduce the costs to all sections of the club. Also, installing Solar Panels on the roof of the clubhouse with battery storage to ensure we can power the lights and clubhouse sustainably would be a significant improvement. This would also allow us to offer more sport on the pitches throughout the year, particularly to our open-age women's teams, inclusive rugby and junior girls' teams who play on-site during these months. Currently, it's not safe for them to be playing as it gets darker, meaning this cost of hiring other facilities impacts the inclusivity of the sessions.
We
would require funding for the actual stands and heads but also the electrical work to install. Depending on the heads we replace this may require planning permissions. This is a significant project but will have a huge impact on a community which benefits from this historic site of sport. This is a match-funding campaign so every £1 you spend will be immediately matched by Aviva and M&S. We also have Sport England agreed to support the campaign if we reach our target. So, please give generously!!

We're aiming to initially raise around £20,000 to go alongside other fundraising that the club have been involved in to ensure we can replace as many of the old and expensive floodlights as possible. The quotes we have currently acquired give us a good indication to start with around a per-light and per-pitch approach. Although there will be further costs around the groundwork, every penny raised will go to improving the outdated equipment and subsequent energy costs.
Many of our participants celebrated a fantastic festival of sport in Birmingham last summer. Lots of the different sections made their way down the midlands and came back inspired to play more sports and get involved locally. This has meant an increase in interest in grassroots sport locally,
and with Netball and Rugby 7's being 2 of the key sport of the Commonwealth games, we want to make sure we can offer this facility all year round. Birmingham was an incredible inspiration to us locally and nationally to embrace sport as part of our everyday.
There are four simple ways to help us reach our target and make this project a reality.
1. Make a pledge. Give what you can to help us achieve our goal together. If we all give a little as a community we can achieve a lot. We prove that every week on and off the pitch/court.
2. Spread the word. Share our project on your social media pages and tell the world why they should get behind us! If you know someone who loves sport then perhaps they could help us.
3. Offer rewards. Do you run a local business? Would you like to be included in our list of rewards below by donating things we can offer to other donors? Email [email protected] if you have ideas of something you could donate. The more the merrier.
