Bath City Farm are raising £30,000 to keep nature close for all to access at this vital green space at the heart of Twerton and Whiteway.
Keep Nature Close appeal at Bath City Farm
Who are we, and what is our project about?
Bath City Farm is a free to access green space in the heart of Twerton and Whiteway, surrounded by neighbourhoods in the most deprived 10% and 20% nationally. Our 37-acre site is a community wellbeing hub and green haven, attracting 1,300 wildlife species. We run 20 different Social Impact Programmes that support all age groups ranging from baby and toddler groups to adult mental health projects, together they helped improve the lives of 550 people last year. Over 200 people with severe mental illness were referred to us through our green social prescribing programme, and 76 people who are long-term unemployed gained work experience and learnt new skills.
Welcoming 70,000 visitors each year, the Farm’s site adds £2.1 million of public wellbeing value from access to green spaces, at a SROI of £46.13 per £1 invested. Our livestock, food-growing areas, community café, play park and nature trails create an accessible environment where local families can connect with nature, learn where their food comes from, and adopt more healthy and sustainable lifestyles. Each year we welcome 580 school children through visits.
Over the past few years, we have planted over 300 trees and 100 metres of hedgerow. 30% tree cover on the site provides significant flood defence for the city below, and the Farm’s land sequesters over 60 tonnes of CO₂ annually, equivalent to the energy use of 100 homes. The site supports at least four bat species, five reptiles and amphibians including the protected Great-Crested Newt, two main badger setts and has yielded Bath’s first records of several rare species, including the Horseshoe Ladybird. Around 60 bird species use the site during the year, including 11.4% of UK Red List and 16.5% of Amber List species.
Having access to these incredible resources, our programme participants have a meaningful impact on the effects of climate change in their local area and are accessing hands-on education about the natural world while overcoming their own personal challenges. Our work brings climate action to the heart of the community in a disadvantaged neighbourhood where people are often likely to feel the worse effects of it.

Why are we crowdfunding?
Through this fundraising appeal, we are asking for £30,000 to help us grow the climate and nature impact of the Farm. We are expanding our regenerative farming practices, improving the site for wildlife conservation and as a green space offering public wellbeing benefits. As host of the Twerton and Whiteway Network. we are currently leading on a two-year funded project which will develop a climate and nature strategy for the local neighbourhood, and we are also a partner in Bath & North East Somerset (B&NES) Council’s Energy in Your Community project.
This year, Bath City Farm will expand its environmental impact by launching a new wildflower nursery, producing wildflower plug plants to support biodiversity and habitat restoration across the B&NES area.
To enable all of this to happen, and ensure that the local community can participate in climate action through our busy calendar of Community Events, and Social Impact Programmes, we need to raise at least £30,000. When there are so many other pressures on everyone’s lives, climate change can take a backseat. However, at Bath City Farm, climate and nature is embedded in everything we do, helping people to be a part of addressing the sustainability challenge.
How we’ll spend the money raised
The money raised in this appeal will ensure that climate change is ingrained in all of the Farm’s activities, from supporting the growth of a new wildflower nursery, to keeping the Farm operating as a free green space available for everyone to access and enjoy, and bringing climate action to the forefront of our community events.
It costs £2,600 a day to run the Farm, including staff costs. The funding raised as part of this campaign will go towards supporting the core costs of the organisation ensuring that we continue to act as a beacon addressing the climate and nature emergency in B&NES.
Every pound invested in the Farm delivers £46.14 of social return on investment so not only are you supporting the Farm, your support will be felt in the wider community; supporting improved mental health and environmental benefits.
