Our Social Purpose

As a social enterprise working to support long-term social change for children and their families – many of whom are from socially deprived areas – our fair fee system across our community nurseries enables us to subsidise up to 35% of children who would otherwise be unable to attend nursery. The funding we raise will also help us to continue offering an essential Early Years education to many families in need once this crisis passes.

London Early Years Foundation (LEYF) is keeping 18 nurseries open across London to provide childcare for key workers and vulnerable children. We need to keep our nurseries going, pay all our staff, many of whom are on low wages, and keep children learning.

LEYF is a charitable social enterprise which means we have to raise money through our fees to achieve our social mission.

Our socially inclusive approach ensures we make a real difference to the lives of more than 4,000 children and their families every year, helping them to develop a passion for learning, regardless of their background. The coronavirus (Covid-19) means our income has dropped. Please help LEYF survive this crisis.

Every day we see how fast the children develop when they attend a LEYF Nursery. We want to make sure that while nurseries across the UK remain closed, young children’s development continues. Just a few days ago we launched our Home Learning pages on our website, these are free to everyone. We need your help so that we can help children to keep learning at home and ensure LEYF survives this crisis.

Importance of Early Years

We are all coping differently in such extraordinary circumstances. But we know that what parents do with their children at home matters, and research proves this.

We have devised activities for you to do with your baby, toddler and pre-school child. Our teams are working hard to regularly update our pages with activities that will support children’s continuous development while they are unable to attend their nursery.

We want to provide parents with lots of videos, top tips and advice. We are raising funds to make sure we have as much content available as possible for parents during the long hours indoors.

We will be sharing new activities at least three times per week. We will try to avoid suggesting anything that might require having to leave home, and instead, explore the amazing learning potential of the everyday objects that everyone may have in and around their house.

These will include:

- Videos of our teachers sharing top tips and advice

- Links to recommended online resources and support

- Activities that parents and their children can enjoy and explore at home

LEYF Pedagogy

LEYF’s approach to teaching and learning is represented by the LEYF Pedagogy Rope. This is based on a wide range of research and ensures we deliver excellent teaching and wonderful experiences for our children.

We now want to share the LEYF way of learning that runs through all play and activities in our nurseries. All the Home Learning activities on our website are devised and presented by LEYF teachers who understand early childhood development and want to share ideas for play and activities that are the key to extending children’s potential. Please help us keep children learning at home. Thank you.
