Aim

We're raising funds for the productions and distribution of our brand new short film: KEBULUR!

Hello! We're RED SQUADRON Productions, an award-winning creative team whose worked on everything from short films & documentaries, to music videos & advertising. With your help, hopefully we'll be able to add to that with a fantastic new short drama/thriller, 'KEBULUR'!

Our Story

Why make this film?

Journalism and the fine line between personal integrity & commercial appeal that people in the profession often face is a topic I love exploring. But specifically, the debate of altruism or exploitation in journalism regarding the publishing of stories about real people fascinates me - whether journalists can truly see the human element, or just a walking story that’ll further their career? It also mirrors questions I’ve been having regarding my own motives for making movies steeped in my home culture - how much of my intent is for representing the culture, versus the opportunity to set my story apart by using my culture? I continue to debate this in my heart, and would love to debate some of that on screen.

I also want to explore the immigrant experience. SHARON, has a backstory which I myself might face as a potential future, having tried to find opportunities in her field in London, but in this story fails to do so and moves back home to Malaysia, and the feelings of lost & self-shame that comes with it. At the same time, this mirrors CINTA's journey, having tried to move from Indonesia to Malaysia in search of better opportunities, and the pushback one faces from the culture you’re trying to assimilate with, not to mention the language barriers faced (Malay, English, Cantonese, Indonesian; we juggle quite a few in Malaysia). Both have the same desire, but at different levels of the global socio-economic scale. It’s an opportunity for me to interrogate some of my own personal anxieties about the future, and potentially quell some of those fears by contextualizing it against other potential outcomes and experiences.
