Karmabank Kitchen is raising funds to buy essential kitchen equipment so that we can turn more surplus food into hot meals and shopping bags
Every Thursday lunchtime, Karmabank's volunteers prepares and serves a nutritious three-course meal and a bag of shopping to local people. We prepare and cook the meals and fill shopping bags with quality surplus produce from local supermarkets and restaurants. We are passionate about reducing food waste, addressing food poverty, championing healthy eating and supporting the community.
We just moved venue because demand has increased - the need for our community kitchen is growing fast as the cost of living is putting more local people into financial hardship, and making life even harder for new arrivals living in temporary accommodation.
Concordia Hall in St Leonards offers us a great space to grow our project. We need a few more bits of equipment to make it work perfectly for us. Our chefs need another electric oven to make it easier to prepare up to 80 meals each week, and our kitchen team need at least one commercial dishwasher to manage the clearing up, and we need a commercial food processor to help make soups and sauces. If we raise any more, we would buy more basic supplies like aprons, gloves and tea towels, and a commercial blender for soups.
Since our launch last May 2022 - we have served 2,437 three course lunches and handed out 2,900 bags of shopping, saving nearly 56 tonnes of food from going to landfill ( that's 3,640 tonnes of methane, the powerful greenhouse gas - not going into the atmosphere!). We are looking to eclipse those numbers in the next year and we need your help to do it.
Thank you for everything you can do to help us to raise awareness and funds for this important cause. Together we can make a difference to our community.
