My aim is to raise £10,000 by cycling my Brompton across Africa to support the Kafunjo Community Foundation in Uganda.

The next stage of Kafunjo Overland (by Brompton) - a multi-stage Trans Africa cycle by folding bike - begins on or around the 7th of May 2026 from the base of The African Renaissance Monument in Dakar, Senegal (where the last stage of the cycle ended).

Joining me for the “Senegal Section” are two supporters who have flown out with their own Bromptons to be part of this mission - James Watson and James Baille.
Together we will ride south through Senegal, across The Gambia, and on to the finishing line of this section at Cap Skirring on the southern border. We are using this section of the journey to take part in a team fund raising effort with the hope that each of us can surpass our £1500 fund raising goal with all donations raised going to supporting the Kafunjo Community Foundation in Uganda (www.Kafunjo.org).
Once we reach Cap Skirring, the 2 Jameses will return home while I’ll forge south-westwards in the general direction of Kafunjo, Uganda with the intention of simply getting as far through Africa as I can before I need to fly back to Uganda at the beginning of July.

This epic, quirky and challenging mission is already well underway. So far, I’ve completed over 3,500km on my Brompton, cycling from Tangier through Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, and into Senegal - becoming (to the best of my knowledge), the first Brompton rider to cross the Sahara Desert. In doing so I was able to raise over £12,000 for The Kafunjo Community Foundation.

But this ride is about far more than cycling.
Truthfully, I’m not a particularly keen cyclist. I’m more of a Brompton admirer, an Africa lover, and a passionate advocate for the work of Bruno Biryomumaisho and the Kafunjo Community Foundation in Uganda.

I’ve worked in close partnership with its visionary director, Bruno Biryomumaisho since the project began in 2013. Alongside other supporters, we’ve built and nurtured a community project that now supports 350 children through education, accommodation, medicine, food, and care.

The challenge now is sustainability.
Too many community projects remain dependent on donations forever. Our goal at Kafunjo is different: to build income-generating systems that can help fund the project from within.
In July, with the third stage of the cycle (hopefully) complete - and ideally with a sizeable amount of support raised - I plan to return to Kafunjo with a team of volunteers to help build our new pig farm.

The pig farm will be the powerhouse of our one-acre cyclical farming model, working hand in hand with the recently completed Kafunjo Green School. It will sit at the centre of a regenerative system where waste becomes resource, animals support crops, and crops support animals - creating food, training, and income within one connected system.
This practical farming model is at the heart of what the Green School stands for: teaching real skills for life through regenerative agriculture, sustainability, and self-reliance.

The Green School itself was completed in 2025 thanks in no small part to the donations raised during the Sahara section of Kafunjo Overland (by Brompton). Now the focus shifts from building the classrooms to building the systems around them that will help sustain the wider project long into the future.
Alongside the pig farm, we’ll also be putting other practical income-generating ideas into place to strengthen the project’s long-term future.
The aim is simple: to build something that brings greater resilience to the project and allows the project to one day stand on its own two feet.
Every mile, every sponsorship, and every person backing this journey helps move us closer to that goal.
Thank you for being part of it.
