I’ve been chosen for a legal internship in NYC this summer!
I come from Colorado, born and raised. I am talented at everything I try, and yet we are all born with difficulties as well, and mine happens to be bipolar 1 disorder and alcoholism. From the ashes, I have really worked on myself, gotten sober—going on 10 years now, and have brought myself up through school to pursuing a Master of Legal Studies at Sandra day O’Connor College of Law at ASU, and to top it off, I applied for and was offered a paid internship spot with the Kings County Civil Court in Brooklyn, NY, this summer, and I couldn’t be more excited. My family has struggled with mental health and also financial issues usually come with that. I am one who they look up to. I have been hospitalized in psyche units a few times, and those memories probably will never leave me. However, my passion for the arts, the faith of healthy friends and family, places to go, things to do, and taking things in stride, has saved my life in so many ways. I hate saying the, “I have no idea how I got in…or why they picked me”… because it is because I am not afraid to show who I am and my talents anymore. Everything is in order for this internship, except the money. I have never had a leg up. Besides borrowing $20 from a friend and venmoing it back, I have never really been in a position of luxury, even financial stability without some sort of suffering with it. For this internship, I would really love to change my life with it. With all that NYC has to offer, it will be an exillerating and opportune time of my life that I have worked so hard for. I have EARNED this.

With the money, I will sublet a place in Brooklyn, NY to house myself during my entire stay. I have found some great rooms for a good price. I’m looking for low deposit, if any at all. I found a great one in Brooklyn that is $1,050 a month. I will be able to pay that with my internship paycheck, but that is on July 24th. The dates of my internship are July 4th through August 12th. I have no idea how I will eat the first half of my stay. I am a banquet server during school, but work has been sparse and sporadic. If I can get $1,500 by donation, I will be able to pay a $500 deposit, and pay for food and transportation for 3 weeks till my first paycheck. New York City is incredibly expensive. And coming from nothing going to the center of the world is no easy task.
