I've spent the last 5 years recording and producing my debut album The Way of the Sun. I've been tinkering and squirrelling away in my home studio, and it’s almost done, so it's time for this lone wolf to call in his pack...

My Musical Journey

My relationship with my music has been quite tempestuous since I began writing songs in my late teens. The fact that it has taken until now to finish an album probably illustrates this... There have been several phases of recording Eps and gigging since my 20s, with at least a couple death-and-rebirth cycles along the way. 

But I always find my way back. Because I love it - truly, madly, deeply. I was born for it, with all its challenges. And, like all complex relationships, if we hang in there, we eventually find the gold.

And, I've always secretly dreamed about making a full length album...

COVID

When Covid blew in, most of these songs already existed, but recording them seemed out of reach. Past home-recording experiences had been frustrating and drawn out, and I would often get stuck in perfectionism. I was basically afraid to finish things and hand them to the world...

Then everything slowed down, and by the end of the 2020 something shifted in me, and I found myself buying software, hardware, microphones, and soundproof blankets. And once I got started, recording the songs was actually quite fun!

I stopped struggling with myself so much. I gave the perfectionist a seat next to me and got on with it, and he has been helpful most of the time. Turns out, he quite likes editing, fine listening, and troubleshooting (like figuring out how the f***k I managed to delete a whole guitar part, and then how to get it back).

So now it's 2026, and I've made the album. Almost.

The Album 

I’ll be honest. I hate talking about my music almost as much as I hate talking about myself. And it’s even harder as it doesn’t really sit down for long in any genre.

What I can tell you is it will be called The Way of the Sun. It has 8 songs, and all of them have earned their spot. No passengers. Some of them are more attention grabbing, while others draw you in more gently. I can hear moments of Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake, Agnes Obel, Johnny Flynn, and even The Pixies walk through at one point...

I recorded my vocals, guitars, harmonium and percussion at home, and called in other musicians to add different elements, like drums, bass, more guitars, horns, strings, banjos, mandolins, congas and guest vocals. Most of them worked their magic remotely, some as far away as Argentina and LA.

I’ve pretty much learned how to record and produce from scratch (and I’m still learning, of course). As always, the curve was steep at first, and there have been some challenges. While a couple of the songs have given me very little trouble, others have needed to be completely rebuilt more than once.

At risk of being melodramatic, it has been quite the hero’s journey.

Now, as I listen to these almost finished songs, with all the mastery the professional musicians have brought to them, I can hear the gold. And it’s time to share it with the world.
