About Jon

Born in Somerset, Jon has lived and Jon has been Mayor of Glastonbury four times, 2016-17, 2020-21, 2021-22, and 2022-23worked in Glastonbury for over twenty years. In that time, he has helped to set up and co-ordinate a number of local groups, charities, and social enterprises, including Avalon Community Energy Limited, Plotgate Community Farm CSA, and the Glastonbury Information Centre CIC.

A seasoned community activist and organiser, he is a Board Member of the Glastonbury Town Deal and works as the Community Project Lead with the Woolavington and Puriton Big Local.

Jon has been a ‘Green’ Town Councillor since 2011 and also a Mendip District Councillor from 2019-23. He has been Mayor of Glastonbury four times, and is the only person in Glastonbury’s history to have been Mayor three years in a row!

Over the years, Jon has championed the participation of local residents in the issues dealt with – and choices made – by Glastonbury and Mendip councils. Helping to create opportunities for all members of the community to be listened to; enabling local people to have their say; to make meaningful contributions to decision-making and to be empowered to take action and make change.

As a prominent Glastonbury Councillor, Jon has shown the difference Greens can make when elected – proposing and supporting motions to:

  • Adopt a ‘Glastonbury Charter for the Environment’ in April 2012
  • Become a ‘Frack Free Council’ in February 2013
  • Ban the use of chemical herbicides and pesticides on all council-owned land and public spaces in August 2015
  • Commit to be ‘single-use-plastic free’ in November 2017
  • To declare a ‘Climate Emergency’ in February 2019 – pledging to make Glastonbury Town Council’s operation Carbon Neutral by 2030
  • Convene a Climate Emergency Advisory Committee in March 2019
  • Become the second ‘Earth Protector Town’ in the world in September 2019 – calling for Ecocide to be recognised as an ‘atrocity crime’ at the International Criminal Court
  • Co-host Peoples’ Assemblies focused on Climate Emergency in 2019 and 2020
  • Employ a Climate Emergency and Resilience Officer in December 2020
  • Declare an ‘Ecological Emergency’ in February 2021
  • Purchase Glastonbury Town Council’s first electric vehicle in July 2021
  • Successfully reduce the Town Council’s carbon footprint by 39% in June 2023; cutting annual running costs by over £4,000

Jon’s Pledge to You

The new Glastonbury and Somerton Constituency encompasses an area that holds so much creative potential and possibility – and together, we have the opportunity to harness this energy, enthusiasm, and entrepreneurialism. As part of our community, I understand the value of unity and collaboration. In serving as your MP, I pledge to champion these values, working alongside you to secure a bright future for our villages and towns.

I commit to being a diligent and present representative for you. Unlike others, Green MPs are not subject to party whips, meaning my dedication is based entirely on the needs and aspirations of our communities. My commitment to you is unwavering; I cannot be swayed by external pressures, nor will I compromise my principles for political gain. My sole aim is to represent your voice, making decisions for the common good; decisions that reflect our collective conscience and best interests.

1713322804_jon_at_consultaion.jpgI will work tirelessly on your behalf, ensuring that integrity is restored to the heart of our political discourse. There are many issues impacting on our lives – issues like the cost of living crisis, the increasing threat of flooding, the lack of housing, the dreadful state of our roads, and the disastrous loss of our public services as Somerset Council fights bankruptcy… More than anything, I am committed to representing you, the people who live and work in our communities. Together, we can foster a community spirit that can overcome any challenge. Together, we will create a fairer, greener future.

Keeping it Green

While we are focused on leveraging the power of digital media to minimise our environmental footprint, we are equally committed to ensuring no one is left behind. The funds raised will play a crucial role in extending our reach beyond the digital realm, enabling us to connect with the non-online community in our constituency.

‘Short Money’ – How your pledge can help the Green Party in Parliament

Very few members of the public have heard of Short Money – most of us are unaware that every vote for the Green Party – our vote – translates into funding for MPs of our party during the next Parliament... even if a Green voter doesn’t live in the areas our MPs are based!

This is why every donation made has a double impact, and it could even have a triple impact:

  • Your donation helps the Green Party to stand for election to Parliament; enabling us to challenge the old parties…
  • By helping Jon to stand, your donation enables all the votes he receives to translate into government funding for the Green MPs – wherever they are elected!
  • If and when Jon retains his deposit, those funds come back and can be spent by the Green Party again, so we can keep building strength both locally and nationally!

In addition, any surplus funds after the General Election will be used by the local Green Party to help finance our 2025 local election candidates.

It is Time for Change – Together, we will create a fairer, greener future!

Thank You!
