Big Brother Watch strongly believes these authoritarian, invasive and unevidenced internal health passports need to be scrapped, now.

This is the first human rights legal challenge in the UK against Covid passes - and we're only able to start this thanks to your incredible support.

Please keep supporting this campaign! We always warned that Covid IDs would be the beginning of expansive health ID checks - not the end.

And just moments ago, the Welsh government extended Covid pass checks beyond nightclubs and sporting events to now include cinemas and theatres.

Make no mistake. This is safety theatre that does nothing for public health but attacks medical privacy and puts up needless barriers to social inclusion.

There are far more proportionate, effective and inclusive measures to keep people safe and get the country back to normal than excluding healthy people without the right health papers from society. But we will never get back to anything like normal with health ID checks that will inevitably continue to expand.

A breach of privacy

Our legal letter to the Welsh government today argues that their Covid pass scheme breaches the right to privacy, protected by the Human Rights Act. You can read it here.

No evidence

No evidence has been provided that the mandatory use of Covid passes will benefit the public health.

Covid IDs don’t tell you that a person doesn’t have Covid or can’t spread Covid, but do make society less free and less accessible for people.

In fact, advice from SAGE, the Welsh Technical Advisory Cell, and the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee in Westminster have warned that Covid passes could be ineffective, raise serious ethical issues, risk public health harms, and the latter even concluded that there is “no justification for them in the science and none in logic”.

Our national campaign against mandatory Covid passes across the UK is backed by 80+ MPs, 11 rights groups, and thousands of you who have collectively raised over £170,000 via this Crowdfunder to support the fight.

Now that we have escalated our legal action, we face significant and growing cost risks. 

And meanwhile, we need ongoing resources to keep the pressure on in Scotland, as well as England and Northern Ireland where Covid passes are being threatened for winter.
