To transform Joey's garden into an outdoor space for him to safely play, learn and enjoy his time at home when he is not at the hospital
Last November, this little legend and absolute beam of sunshine, Joey, was diagnosed with leukaemia at four years of age.
Joey, and his parents Sarah and Andy, are one of the loviest and kindest little families we have had the privilege to get to know, and the news of Joey’s leukaemia was an absolutely devastating shock to all their family and friends near and far.
Joey, Sarah and Andy are on a challenging and tough journey together.
The chemotherapy treatment that Joe is undergoing leaves him feeling incredibly low in energy, tired and weak. When he does get time at home away from hospital he is often exhausted, and the chemotherapy treatment also makes him immunocompromised, meaning that even on days when Joey does feel up for having a play outside, settings such as playgrounds and parks can be unsafe as Joe’s immune system is extremely vulnerable to any viruses and bacteria. It's also not always feasible for Joe to actually leave the house as sometimes his moments of energy to play don't last long.
So, we had a thought - what better way to offer to help than put together a project to transform their garden at home into a versatile, playful and educational outdoor space for Joey and his parents to enjoy over the spring and summer months, and more to come! And with Sarah and Andy's blessing, that is exactly what we have set out to achieve.
We want to build an exciting and useful outdoor space with a kids zone for Joey to safely play outside, vegetable beds to enjoy gardening together, a patio and seating area to spend time together doing activities, and a sunny spot for Sarah and Andy to sit back and enjoy much needed moments of relaxation.
Myself, Mick and the rest of the Bark Brick & Block team will be very happily donating our time, skills and labour to make this garden transformation happen, and we will be asking our regular suppliers for donations and discounts wherever possible.
But - we really need your help too!
In order to make this project possible for us to complete for Joey, Sarah and Andy, we will also need to raise some funds to help us pay for the materials needed for the garden transformation.
We are aiming to raise £6,000.00, as we believe with good design and smart material choices, this amount would cover our basic requirements to make a real difference to the garden. But the more we can raise, the better the new garden can be!!
Every contribution really will make an enormous difference towards enabling us to build Joey’s new garden, no matter how small the amount. So we ask you to please support us to make this project happen!
We will keep everyone updated on the project as things progress, and we plan to document the garden build and final transformation, so everyone who donated can feel involved! And any of the raised money which is not spent on the garden transformation will go towards supporting the family's ongoing journey.
We thank you so much for your support.
