To purchase two beach wheelchairs to enable people with mobility difficulties inclusive access to enjoy days out at the beach.

by Made-Well CIC in Okehampton, Devon, United Kingdom

Made-Well is a not-for-profit community interest company established in August 2007. We support adults with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, mental health conditions and those suffering isolation and loneliness. Made-Well provides enabling support, community outreach, 1:1 support, education and learning.

A drive of Made-Well is to break down barriers to inclusion. We have an appointed accessibility ambassador called Jeanette whom is a wheelchair user and works with us on making our offer as accessible as possible. Jeanette would like to raise funds for Made-Well to purchase two beach wheelchairs.

A trip to the beach is off limits for some people with a disability. We need to change that, and the law supports it.

Having a beach wheelchair makes it possible for people with disabilities to access the beach and all the fun it has to offer. With a beach wheelchair, people can go in the water, take part in beach activities, and just enjoy the sunshine and fresh air..

To raise the funds Jeanette is going to take part in a 490 metre zipe wire challange by JUMPING OFF A 50M CLIFF AT 40MPH!The Zip at Adrenalin Quarry hurls you off sheer cliffs and over a flooded Cornish quarry. There’s nothing like it anywhere else in the UK…

Jeanette's Story

‘Jeanette had a traumatic brain injury in 2011, which left her with weakness in her left leg. She recovered and was walking with a stick but was then sadly struck down with Encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) in 2013. This left her with seizure, tunnel vision, anxiety disorder, unable to bare weight or to sit without being strapped upright.

She was unable to use her left arm or eat solid foods. She has been airlifted to hospital many times. In 2017 Jeanette was given an assistant dog, Biscuit, from Canine Partners, which changed her life. With the help of an Occupation Therapist she was able to use her left hand and sit unaided. She was making slow but steady progress until coronavirus stopped everything. She hopes this will start again soon. Jeanette now comes to Made-Well twice a week which she loves. She is the accessibility ambassador for Made-Well and would like to raise money for equipment to help support the clients who attend, including herself’
