Backstory of Intrepid Adventure Grant
Emily Woodhouse, editor of Intrepid Magazine, wanted to go on an adventure. Specifically, she wanted to climb unnamed mountains in Kyrgyzstan...
She didn't think it was safe to do that on her own, because she wasn't an experience mountaineer. Trouble was, she also didn't have enough money going spare to afford to be on a trip with a guide. She looked into grants, but time after time they said that commercial tours weren't eligible.
Then she remembered a story about a man who couldn't sell his stately home...
No one would give him the full price for the house - it was too expensive for most people who wanted to live there. Instead, he sold £2 raffle tickets until he raised the value of the house and then picked a winner. Your dream home for £2?! Wouldn't that be amazing?
Why can't the same thing happen for adventure grants...?
How The Grant Works
There are no entry forms. There is no selection criteria.
To have a chance to receive the grant, simply donate towards it: £1 = 1 "raffle ticket". You can hold as many tickets as you like. The more you donate the higher chance you have of winning (but if you donate £500 then you should have probably just gone on your adventure!).
There is also an option to donate without being entered into the draw.
There will be a minimum of two grants (hopefully £500 each). If we don't reach the £1000 funding total, there won't be a grant. We're on all or nothing here. If we beat the fundraising total, we'll do further grants of up to £500 each. You cannot win more than one grant.
The winners will be selected in two months - in time to be announced in Issue 3 of Intrepid Magazine.
HALF OF THE GRANTS ARE RESERVED FOR WOMEN - this is because Intrepid Magazine supports women in adventure and outdoors.
FAQ
1. What do I have to do if I win?
You'll need to complete your adventure within one year. The grant will be paid out after Intrepid Magazine has received proof that your adventure has taken place. The only criteria is that you'll be required to write an article about your adventure for publication in Intrepid Magazine.
2. What kind of adventure can I have?
In the spirit of Intrepid Magazine, the adventure should be predominately human powered. Other than that, you can do what you like! We do ask for a brief description of the adventure if you win, to check.
3. Why are half the grants reserved for women?
Intrepid Magazine is a female-first adventure and outdoor sport magazine. It is printed in the UK, but has an online subscription for worldwide readers. The bread and butter of Intrepid are inspiring stories told by female adventurers. Get Intrepid here: intrepid-magazine.com
4. I want to make a donation of a different amount to £1 or £5. Will I still be entered into the raffle?
Please make raffle entering donations through the £1 and £5 options. You can do this as many times as you like. We'll enter you into the raffle with the number of tickets equivalent to £1 = 1 ticket.
P.S. Emily isn't entering. Imagine how embarrassing it would be if she won!
