Introduction
Join us in celebrating cultural diversity and promoting respect for all at the International Respect Kite Festival! Organised by the Plymouth and Devon Racial Equality Council (PDREC), this vibrant festival will take place on the 27th of July at Plymouth Hoe from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Your support will help us create an unforgettable experience that brings our community together through the beauty and joy of kite flying.
About the Festival
The International Respect Kite Festival is a celebration of Plymouth’s rich cultural diversity, emphasising the importance of respect and equality. Kite festivals are celebrated worldwide, with each culture bringing its own unique history and customs to this joyous activity. From India’s Makar Sankranti to Japan’s Children’s Day, Thailand’s New Year festivities, Indonesia’s International Kite Festival, and the Bristol International Kite Festival in the UK, kite flying is a universal symbol of cultural unity and celebration.
Goals
Our aim is to raise £5,000 to cover the costs of hiring and setting up a marquee for the International Respect Kite Festival. This funding will ensure we can provide a free, inclusive, and enriching event for all members of our community.
Beneficiaries
This festival will benefit the entire Plymouth community, particularly children and families, by promoting understanding, respect, and appreciation for diverse cultures. The PDREC has a longstanding commitment to challenging prejudice, discrimination, and racism, and this event is a vital part of our efforts.

Why Support This Festival?
In our current climate, fostering respect and understanding among different communities is more important than ever. According to the most recent data, hate crimes have significantly increased, with 145,214 hate crime offenses recorded in the year ending March 2023, which represents a substantial rise from previous years (Gov.uk) (Commons Library) (Stonewall) (Stop Hate UK). This highlights the ongoing need for events that promote inclusivity and respect.
