Inside the Lines - 2nd series of the audio comedy!

Aim

We’re raising money to make Series 2 of our audio sitcom Inside the Lines and to share it with more people online and through events!

What is Inside the Lines?

Inside the Lines is an audio sitcom about two friends who run a colouring-in shop. It’s warm, silly, slightly chaotic, and totally unscripted - each episode is devised in the recording studio!

We loved the idea so much we had to make it happen, even though we’d never made anything like this before. 

So last year, we self-funded and independently produced the first series. We gathered a brilliant group of collaborators, and figured it out as we went along.

It turns out people really connected with it.

We released six episodes, hosted live events in Brighton, sold tickets and merch, and heard from listeners who told us the series brought them joy, warmth, and laughter:

• “Joyous, gentle and slightly barmy. Perfection.”

• "Black Books, but kinder."
• “The perfect joyful antidote to everything else going on.”

So we are!

Why we’re crowdfunding

We learned what it actually takes to make something like this independently. Honestly, Inside the Lines only exists because of the time and care put in by the team who made it.

It also cost us over £2,000 to produce and launch. When we say that, some people go: “really?”

Well, yes, because there’s:

• recording space
• travel for collaborators
• hosting and distribution
• artwork and illustration
• promotional materials
• events to help launch and share the series

And those are just the costs - nobody got paid.

And that was okay. Everyone gave their time, energy, skill, and care because they believed in the project and wanted to make something good together, so listeners could have something wonderful.

Here’s the thing: it’s REALLY good. We’ve had so much feedback on the quality of both the comedy and the production (it’s an in-joke between us that Inside the Lines is the Radio 4 comedy series no one commissioned us to make, but we made it anyway).

We’re incredibly proud of what we made, but it was also a HUGE amount of work.

But the difference now is that Inside the Lines is no longer an unknown experiment.

We know what it takes to make it, we know people enjoy it... now we want to make more of it and help more people find it.

What your support makes possible

We are going to make Series 2 whatever happens.

But your support will make A REAL DIFFERENCE to what we’re able to create and how sustainably we’re able to do it.

Our crowdfunding target of £3,000 is intentionally realistic and conservative.

It mostly covers the core costs of making the series and launching it properly:

• recording
• travel
• hosting
• artwork
• events
• promotion
• platform fees
• and a small contingency

Any money left after core costs will be shared across the team as a contribution towards the huge amount of work that goes into making the series.

Nobody involved is earning proper wages from this project. If this were a fully funded commercial production, it probably would never happen.

This is something made through collaboration, goodwill, care, and a shared belief that creating joyful things matters.

What crowdfunding gives us is the chance to make the series without carrying all of the financial pressure ourselves, and to put more energy into actually sharing it with people once it exists.

That was one of our biggest lessons from Series 1.

We spent so much time making the series that we had very little left in the tank to promote it afterwards.

This time, we want to change that.

Stretch goals

If we raise more than our initial target, we’ll use that support to do EVEN MORE.

£4,000 - We’ll create more live and real-world events connected to the series, both in Brighton and online!

£5,000 - We’ll produce the first ever live episode of Inside the Lines!!

What we’re making

Series 2 will include:

• six new episodes
• new guest performers and collaborators
• original music
• live events
• and some new creative surprises we’re very excited about

We’re also continuing to work with our incredible team, including:

alongside a brilliant group of guest performers... which we'll be announcing throughout June!

A final note

This project exists because people cared about a strange little audio comedy about colouring in.

That still feels slightly surreal to us.
