Aim: Ingwe Leopard Research is a citizen science project in South Africa ensuring the conservation of leopards thanks to collaboration.
- Leopards live in a multitude of environments in different parts of the world. It is the most adaptable of all the big cat species.
- Leopards are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Their population is declining.
- Leopards have disappeared from 67% of their historic range in South Africa.
- 63% of suitable leopard habitats are outside protected areas.
- The main threats are habitat fragmentation, poaching for their skins, snares (wire traps), human-wildlife conflict and illegal killings.
- Expand our collaborative network to over 30 nature reserves participating to the research, ensure safe leopard movements through the creation of ecological corridors and the regular removal of deadly traps.
- Engage the public in wildlife conservation through citizen science by using photographs taken and artificial intelligence to identify at least a 100 leopards.
- Contribute to the national monitoring program, publish research findings and share results with relevant authorities to promote effective conservation practices.
- Conduct fieldwork and engage with the community to understand and reduce human-wildlife conflicts.
- 20+ reserves already participating to the research covering 160,000ha (1600km2)
- 2000+ leopard photographs submitted on the AI platform for individual identification
- The On Track Foundation the first contributor for leopard images in South Africa.
- 900+ sightings of leopards recorded
This crowdfunding campaign will contribute to one third of a yearly budget! Sponsors and the On Track Foundation cover the other two-thirds.
Help us create the biggest network that promotes collaboration between the safari industry, conservation organizations and the academic field!
Together, we can prove that this approach is replicable in the whole world!
