To raise funds to expand the indoor climbing facilities in Scarborough from 5 lines to 27 and create a dedicated bouldering room

by Melanie Bonney in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom

We're still collecting donations

On the 6th June 2023 we'd raised £550 with 4 supporters in 56 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.

Coast and Vale Community Action (CaVCA) exists to help communities thrive because we believe people and places matter.  We do this by providing community facilities, managed workspace, community projects and providing practical help to enable local communities to take action over self-identified issues of importance to them.

One of the facilities we run is a small but perfectly formed indoor climbing wall. Despite its modest size it is well used, and valued locally, as our closest indoor climbing facilities are a two hour round trip away.  Our climbers come from a range of backgrounds and ages, we are open and inclusive, and love to share our community with others.  We know the positive impact of climbing on health and wellbeing, including and importantly, emotional wellbeing.  We know the impact on confidence and aspirations amongst young people.  We love climbing.

Why are we crowdfunding?

We have a dedicated climbing community in Scarborough and were are keen to open up the opportunity for more people to get involved in climbing.

As a charity, CaVCA is interested in helping people to make the changes they want for the positive benefit to their community.  We seek to offer ways to help people to create opportunities for themselves.  We try to build aspirations, connections and a strong sense of community identity.  We've been talking to the climbers who use our wall, we've been talking with the instructors who hire our wall to run classes for people of all ages and all abilities.  We know there is a real opportunity to grow climbing in Scarborough, and we know what an impact it will have on our local community.

Our nearest climbing centres are further than 40 miles away, and not great to get to, so for some time now we have been seeking a way to create a better climbing centre in the town.  Finding the right place, and the right support, has been challenging - so we have been thinking laterally.

Thanks to the help of some pretty awesome people from the indoor climbing community and industry, we think we have come up with a plan to remodel some of our existing space at The Street to enhance the climbing facilities we already have be increasing the number of lines, height, and complexity as well as converting an existing space into a dedicated bouldering room.

All of this, including the remodelling of the entrance to the building to ensure existing building users' experience is not compromised, will cost in the region of £250k.  This is a much more modest sum than we would be needing for a new build facility.

Crowdfunding forms one strand of our funding strategy, we're also going to be doing a number of sponsored climbing events at the Street - more details will appear on our website shortly.1681141867_img_4249.jpg

How we’ll spend the money raised

The money raised will be fully spent on creating our enhanced climbing facilities.  We can phase the development into three chunks.  We would start with the bouldering suite as bouldering is not currently available at all in Scarborough. Phase Two would create high walls in the existing full height foyer and Phase Three would be the sports hall.

Community impact

Rock climbing has extensive social and health benefits to those taking part.  Climbing is a generous and accessible pursuit, where climbers are keen to share their skills with others and welcome them into the climbing community.  Climbing builds confidence, aids communication, strengthens self awareness, builds physical and emotional strength, and is a lot of fun.

We believe that everyone who wants to have a go should have the opportunity to do so and we aim to build a vibrant, inclusive and accessible climbing culture here in Scarborough.
