About the Woodshop of Recycled Delights CIC

The Woodshop of Recycled Delights CIC (WoRD) was founded in 2021 to address two urgent challenges: the growing issue of timber waste and the lack of carpentry opportunities for communities traditionally excluded from DIY skills training.

What we do:

  • Run free, accessible workshops to teach carpentry skills and introduce safe power tool use
  • Promote carbon literacy to help people understand environmental responsibility
  • Rescue timber from the waste stream and repurpose it to extend the life of materials
  • Host build days in the Garden of Earthly Delights where we come together to create
  • Provide practical solutions like planters, repairs, and bespoke builds for gardens, schools, food banks, and parklets across London

So far, we’ve:

  • Saved over 14 tonnes of timber from waste
  • Offset 25 tonnes of CO2 emissions
  • Delivered workshops to 1179 people across London

But now we need your support to continue growing and improving our space!

The Garden of Earthly Delights: Our Community Hub

The Woodshop of Recycled Delights operates from the Garden of Earthly Delights (GED), an urban oasis in the heart of London. It began as a small, grassroots space outside Hackney Central Station and quickly gained support, leading to our own plot offered by the council. After five years of building this incredible community resource, we’ve just secured a three-year lease to continue growing.

The GED offers:

  • Free workshops on gardening, composting, and green crafts
  • A peaceful space for community connection and environmental education
  • Organic produce grown year-round

Together, WoRD and GED are offering a unique combination of practical skills, community connection, and environmental education in Hackney, and we need your help to improve our infrastructure!

The Problem We’re Facing

The demand for our workshops is higher than ever, and our outdoor workshop is no longer enough to meet the needs of our community. Despite our success, our tools and timber are often exposed to the elements, and when it rains we struggle to run workshops, and our stock of reclaimed timber is at risk of rotting!

Without a covered workshop, we’re unable to operate during bad weather, and our reclaimed materials are at risk. But with your help, we can solve this problem and continue doing what we do best.

Our Solution: The Covered Workshop

With £5000, we can build a covered workshop area at the back of the garden. This new space will include:

  • Expanded wood storage to protect our materials from the elements
  • A dedicated area for tools and workbenches
  • A weatherproofed environment to keep our workshops running all year round

With this shelter, we’ll be able to:

  • Run workshops in any weather
  • Ensure our tools don’t rust
  • Protect our reclaimed wood from winter rains
  • Securely store people’s projects
  • Increase workshop safety
  • Help even more community gardens across London

Once we have this covered workshop, our work can continue unhindered, and we can deliver even more value to the community.

A New Compost Toilet for GED

In addition to the workshop, we also need to improve the toilet facilities at GED. Currently, the garden only has a basic bucket toilet that is uncomfortable, unsanitary, and inaccessible for many of our users—especially for gender-diverse and disabled patrons.

We want to build a new composting toilet that will be accessible, comfortable, and environmentally friendly. The composting toilet will:

  • Be designed with input from the community to ensure accessibility and comfort
  • Convert waste into soil-enriching compost to support the garden’s growth
  • Be equipped to handle all toilet-related needs

With £5000, we’ll have enough to design and build this much-needed facility, creating a safe, welcoming space for everyone who visits GED.

How You Can Help

We need to raise £10,000 to make these improvements possible. This will cover both the covered workshop and the composting toilet.

By donating to this Crowdfunder, you’ll help us:

  • Build a weatherproofed workshop that will allow us to continue running workshops year-round
  • Create a sustainable, accessible composting toilet to make GED more inclusive for everyone

Join Us in Building the Future of GED and WoRD

The Woodshop of Recycled Delights and the Garden of Earthly Delights are making a real difference in Hackney and beyond. We’ve already saved tons of timber from the waste stream, delivered essential skills to thousands of people, and provided a welcoming space for people to connect with nature and each other. But we need your support to take the next step.

Please donate today to help us build the infrastructure we need to continue growing, creating, and connecting. With your support, we’ll be able to make an even bigger impact in 2025 and beyond.

Thank You for Your Support!

Together, we can build a sustainable, inclusive community hub that will benefit people and the planet for years to come. Every contribution counts.
